What are some of the best tools and resources to help automate the process?

the problem with SEO tools and tricks is that every "expert" says something different, and it is very hard to prove what works and what doesn't because there are so many factors involved.

In general, it seems like linkbuilding is a more important thing to work on if you are trying to rank for keywords with any level of competition.

I did SEO for a company for a little over a year and the best place I found was:

Look under the tools section. Sign up for their weekly digest, some great tips. Check out the forums to see if google is doing a rebuild of their indexes or any other major event. mellocj is right though, link building, and strong/unique content. Focus on keyword density.

I do Search Marketing for a living, primarily organic SEO and paid search management. There is indeed a large # of factors to consider, trying to explain it all in one forum post is like trying to mail a haircut.

seomoz.org is a great place to start, they have a lot of tools available in the free section, and several others in the premimum members section. the link building guide alone is worth the price of a month's membership. the forum has great articles as well.

seobook.com, is a great read if you're new to SEO, it's particularly popular among small businesses attempting to do their optimization in-house. there's also a forum and a handful of useful tools. SEO Book itself costs $50, but if you shoot me a PM I can send you a copy along with a few other training materials I used when I was new to the industry.

I think that http://soloSEO.com is a great tool to start you off. They even offer a free trial.

It will run reports for various different things for you, and help you organize your efforts.

2nd here for seomoz.org as well. Its a great resource, and the information there is very very credible.

I wouldnt bother with most forums, as they are so filled with clutter and junk that you waste as much time sorting through false information as you do reading helpful information.

Stick with the pros. Gooruze.com also has some great articles written by the industries most respected professionals.
