i'm in love

i don't know if it's just the fact that i have far fewer extensions enabled or that this browser is just really this fast--

AdBlock Plus
Customize Google
Download Statusbar
DownthemAll
Fission
IE Tab (might even uninstall)
Mouse Gestures Redox
Remember The Milk For Gmail
Tab Mix Plus

but i am fucking falling in love with this browser all over again.

How do I make the bookmarks act rationally?

If you create a new folder, it doesn't stick with the other folders and you can't arrange them with a right click. WTF.

you try out beta 4? i know you said it was a problem in beta 3. and you're sure it's not only when you're in a video or plugin? like if you click on the page and then try it does it still happen?

Quote :

what do you mean? like not save as or just a direct open (which is basically saving to your PC and then opening) but actually open the copy that's on the server?

beta 4 seems to be much better than beta 3 actually. i'd give it a try.

yeah it's obvious they're still working on the bookmark system. i don't mind though - i don't use them that heavily.

what do you mean? right click > properties > type a new name works for me

yeah it doesn't work after clicking the page (occasionally) in b3. i'll try b4

i prefer ie's right click > rename

Basically when I use firefox, my desktop becomes my temp folder and I don't clean it up until I have about 200 objects. Even then, I usually just make a folder called "clean" and drag everything there telling myself one day I'll sort it. Can you say fragmented?

Who is mozilla to imply I'm not competent enough to censor my .msi/.exe/.rar/.zip downloads?

I thought I was the only one. But I keep it down to fewer objects than that... maybe 50 before I get sick of it.

lol i guess i'm obsessive compulsive about keeping my desktop clean - i move/organize/delete all my downloads as i'm browsing

compressed files can be opened directly, at least for me. just not exe's which i don't really mind since i use download statusbar and can doubleclick anything directly once it's done DLing.

i think they definitely optimized this beta to work better with all of Google's stuff like the new gmail, calendar, reader, etc. - they're all so responsive to this browser now for some reason

type about:config in your location bar and hit enter. bypass the warning about your warranty blah blah.
there will be a box at the top of that window with all your preferences listed
right click and create a new boolean value called "Browser.urlbar.richResults" and set it to false
restart your browser and voila

or if that's too hard, there was a link to an extension that would do this for you in that kb article: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227

[Edited on March 12, 2008 at 4:43 PM. Reason : apparently the about:config has no effect on 3b4. try the extension.]

yeah, all the plugin devs are releasing their builds on their own sites because mozilla takes forever to list them and test them and make sure they get "secure updates"

"seems a little slower to open than my previous version of firefox"

takes the same time for me, personally. and yes, it is a LITTLE slower to open up than IE (if you customize IE with all the plugins it needs to have similar functionality and add multiple tabs of homepages, etc. - like use IE the same way you would use FireFox, it takes a longer time to open up too), which is why everyone tends to leave it open, which is why this memory thing is a huge deal now. according to PCMag: "Browser startup time was vastly improved, taking just 2 seconds to load, compared with the first beta's 25 seconds." (that's about beta 4) source: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2275218,00.asp

Quote :
"when is the final release scheduled?"

they were going to go straight to final from beta 4 but at their last meeting they decided to do a beta 5 by march 27 and then go from there. minutes of that meeting to see what is still flawed here: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox3/StatusMeetings/2008-03-11

Quote :

this adblock plus version asks you to subscribe to your option of lists from here: http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions which are updated regularly. I subscribed to JamePlucisinski, EasyList + EasyElement and have had no ads on the sites that I visit

Quote :

yeah looks like a lot of the mac users like it. i'm happy with the windows one, no skin required.

well I couldn't get the rich URL fix to work for some reason ... so I browsed to config window and changed a setting called "browser.urlbar.maxRichResults" from 25 to 0. my only complain with that is it does not show any results, which isn't too awful.

Do you think I could create an entry "browser.maxResults" and set the value to 25? That way I'd get URL results without all the richness?

shit man, that didn't work either ... I've been reading some discussions, and it looks like in Beta 2, there was a browser.urlbar.richResults field; but that's gone in 4 ... so I know that setting has gotta be hidden in hear somewhere ...

maybe it's not hidden, but it is still a beta - they may have messed up and forgotten to tell the urlbar to check this variable before displaying or something. maybe they'll fix it in b5

i installed IE tab and mine says open in ext app and launches in IE. you don't have IE tab installed i'm assuming? i might uninstall it just for that actually - sounds really useful.

yes, i have two profiles set up... it's not a problem, it's just one profile is royally jacked up with this RichResult mess

i've reset all the entries and it works now... but what I don't understand is why RichResults still comes up even after deleting all the privacy information

no, i don't have IE tab. i do have autohotkeys (not a firefox plugin, just a small program for global shortcuts) installed and a little script so that i can hit:

1. Ctrl + L
2. Ctrl + C
3. Ctrl + Shift + I

and then the page url i copied opens up in IE.

it's a few steps, but once you do it a few times it's like adding 2 + 2. i would imagine that you could modify that script to automatically get the url of your current firefox tab and just do step 3, but that was more work than i was willing to put into a shortcut.

so has anyone successfully figured out how to turn off RichResults?

all I want to see is the URL history when i click the drop down on the address bar...

this is a serious flaw.

Sorry you think it's a flaw, I like it.

I'm sure there will be a way to turn it off in the final version.
