How many people have used both zyrtec and calritin, and how to they compare?I use claritin mostly, but it doesn't seem to be helping as much as it used to. I'm contemplating switching to zyrtec since it just went OTC.

They are in the same chemical family I believe. Zyrtec (cetirizine), Allegra (fexofenadine), and Claritin (loratidine) are similar in the way they work and are sometimes recommended interchangeably. Allegra is less sedating than Claritin and Zyrtec though.

I've used both. I have cat allergies and the Zyrtec is a lot better, especially for itchy, burning eyes and wheezing. Claritin helps with the nasal drip, but not much else.

I used claritin for years, then it stopped working and i switched to allegra, after a few years it stopped working, and i switched to zyrtec. That was about 8 years ago. I haven't tried getting the generic cetirizine yet, but that's gonna happen when i finish my last bottle of the prescription variety.

They will still write prescriptions for OTC medicines. I get loratadine from the NCSU pharmacy (in a pill bottle), 30 pills for like $3.25. Just an FYI, since Zyrtec is like $25 for 10 pills now that its OTC.I have horrible allergies, but I have taken both. I only will take Zyrtec if I have a sinus infection or something like that because it makes me very drowsy. Claritin is my everyday. I am Claritin clear![Edited on March 6, 2008 at 10:53 PM.
