So I'm going to be over in Germany for a month or more and trying to figure some awesome things out to do. I'm going over for work so its not really going to be a fun trip but I want to make the most out of my nights and weekends. If anyone has any good ideas about places to go, restaurants, etc. there in Dusseldorf or around there (Belgium, Netherlands, France) lemme know. Also if any tww's are going to be over there we should meet up.[Edited on March 5, 2008 at 4:30 PM. We took a day trip to Cologne and on the way back got kicked off in Dusseldorf. We had a lot more fun in Dusseldorf. If you want to go on a day/few day trip the train ride to Amsterdam is really nice and Amsterdam is great. You don't have to smoke anything to have a great time there. I would suggest that you go to a couple of the nicer coffee shops and hang out.

There's a little town called Heidelburg (i think) up in that NW corner that is one of the few towns not burned during the war. It's soooo beautiful and gives you an idea of what pre-war architecture in Germany was like.
3/5/2008 6:50:10 PM
^ heidelburg is in the Southwest. Beautiful city. Lots of Americans though since there is an Army base there
3/5/2008 7:14:33 PM

i spent ~5 months in bremen, germany last winter -- the weather's not great this time of year, but it should be starting to get better...i never made it to dusseldorf, but i enjoyed the weekend i spent in köln (though i was there for karneval); bremen isn't too exciting but the beck's brewery is there and as the weather warms up the beer gardens by the river are really nice (i imagine this would be the same in nearly every german city/town in spring and summer)i went to belgium right before i came back and loved it -- i spent a few days in brussels trying out lots of good beer and eating chocolate and frites, it was fantastic; i also took a day trip to antwerp which was nicethe trains in germany are incredibly efficient and easy to travel on, so you'll have no problem getting around -- enjoy your trip!

if you have the time for a weekend trip or whatever, go to prague. great town, great beer and food, nice people, great nightlife, architecture etceveryone should go to vienna once in their lifeswitzerland for the outdoors stuff, hiking, caving, whatever. beautiful as hell but a tad pricey and yeah a bit more accessible would be bavaria for a long weekend. breathtaking beauty, some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, the beer is yummy, great little towns, cool castles to tour.]

i liked bremen, too...stop by the beck's brewerythey give you (quite literally) as much beer as you can drink (from all of their available types) at the end of the tour...people (read: americans) were absolutely shit-faced leaving...all-in-all, though, i really enjoyed itif you have a day, visit berlin...i really enjoyed that, as well...though i was pissed that i didn't get to see the bombed-out church (we were at the top of the memorial tower in the center of the city and could see it)...i have a particular love for the macabre

Take a trip to the Mosel River and spend as much time in the villages along it as possible, eating and drinking. hit up the Bitburger brewery and find a hotel in that town to drink beer all night.Along the Mosel - Trier, Bernkastel, Cochem... check out some of the castles.. Burg Eltz.I was born in Bitburg and when my Dad took me back there (Germany) for the first time we spent a little time in Cologne, and most of our time near and around the Mosel. As far as places that are not in NW Germany, Berchetsgarten (Hitler's Eagle's Nest was here) and the Zugspitze (southern Germany, in the Alps), Rothenberg (medieval walled village near the eastern border) are all worth excursions, in addition to places people have already provided. What a great country.

I had a great time in Dusseldorf touring the old city - there's a section with a bunch of breweries which make this like especially dusseldorfy dark bitter which they serve in tall skinny glasses and you drink it on the sidewalk at stand up tables.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altstadt_%28D%C3%BCsseldorf%29also, hop over to Solingen and buy some knives.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to try and get out as much as possible. Got 4 days for Easter that we can't work so the train to Amsterdam is definitely a possibility, as well as hitting up Brussels and even Paris. Any more ideas would be great!^ I need to look into that. Those are nice knives.

If you want to see some holocaust shit then go to Dachau. It's about 30 min north of Munich which will be a decent trip but not too bad if you take the ICE train.FUcking mind blowingEverything that they learned at Dachau set the precedence for Auschwitz.[Edited on March 7, 2008 at 8:06 PM.
