i was under the impression that he was a douche because of the TV show and ratings.

he was a nice guy, just liked to play "hard" joking around. i met him while touring his shop a few years ago, his personality seemed dead on as it was on tv.

definitely. personally not my style of rods he built, but the man was a genius fabricator and businessman.

crass as is may be, i did have to laugh a little at one of the comments to that article.

He might have been a dick but the man was a legend, the boydster was his cash cow and he built it over and over again but hes got some serious ones in his legacy.

even if he didn't do shit but run the business (he was hands on in the early years), it's impressive to build such a company and brand your own name. he was also involved in a lot of good causes.

I heard something about choking on dinner, going to hospital and somehow not recovering? That sounds wrong to me but that's the first thing I had heard besides this thread.

i read he was a lifelong diabetic and it was complications from a recent surgery

im pretty sure the tv show was far from accurate on his and many other employees' dispositions. our shop had consulted with dwayne (sp?) on some issues with a build we had, and he was hundreds of times beyond helpful and considerate compared with what we expected from seeing his behavoir on the show. i have a great deal of respect for boyd for what he has done for the evolution of the industry we love, where it was when he started, and where it is now in thanks to him and others...

btw, hot rod culture lost this week also... john buttera. this is the dude that brought the tube chassis to drag racing. pretty sure he was on some of the monster garage episodes too, right?
