Do NOT go with AAA Van Lines. My parents picked them out (I assume based solely on price) when they moved and gave me a bunch of their furniture. They hauled a bunch of stuff up from Georgia, but they also damaged a lot of it (they didn't wrap anything, so most of my bookshelves, tables, etc. were dinged, and the slipcover on the couch was torn). And at one point they took something out and said, "Is this yours? I'm not sure."

I've done cross-country moves twice. My best advice would be to find a one-way truck rental, pay someone to load it properly, and drive it yourself. When you arrive, arrange to have someone unload it as well (you can find these people on Craigslist under services). Long distance movers have profit in mind. They are not going to load a 30 foot truck with just your stuff. They may wait a couple of days to pick up another load somewhere else. Unless you specify a certain date for delivery (which costs more I believe), they legally have 30 days to get your stuff to your new place.
