since the AP began its poll in 1948-1949. That's 59 seasons of the poll. There's about 20 weeks of basketball every year, so out of 780 possible #1 rankings, there have only been 53 teams. I guess UCLA takes out a bunch, namely 200, since they went on that 10 year spree. And the big bad blue schools held it for a while. State had it a lot in the 70's. I'm not sure, but I think they were still ranked in spite of the "recruiting" violations brought on by David Thompson. Anyway.http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news;_ylt=AlrEaq76XLe0TJGoUnJsGPY5nYcB?slug=ap-t25-collegebkbpoll&prov=ap&type=lgnsDiscuss.

yeah, I am really surprised it was a lot more. Especially with all the little schools back in the 50s and 60s who were badasses (San Francisco for example)

David "Skywalker" Thompson did lead us to the '74 Championship. He would have probably also led us to the '73 Championship had it not been for some violations that made us ineligible for the NCAAt that year.List of total all time #1 rankings, in ascending order:UCLA 125Duke 104North Carolina 87Kentucky 85Cincinnati 43Indiana 41Kansas 39UNLV 30San Francisco 28Ohio State 28Arizona 26Connecticut 21Michigan 18DePaul 15Massachusettes 15Stanford 15North Carolina State 11Georgetown 11Arkansas 11Virginia 11Houston 11Florida 9Kansas State 8St. Johns 8West Virginia 8Syracuse 6Missouri 6Temple 6Seton Hall 6Notre Dame 5Bradley 5Oklahoma 5Oregon State 5Holy Cross 5Memphis 5Michigan State 4La Salle 4Indiana State 4Marquette 3Loyola (IL) 3Illinois 2Duquesne 2St. Louis 2Alabama 2Wake Forest 2St. Joseph's 1Wisconsin 1Tennessee 1Total 893[Edited on February 26, 2008 at 1:07 PM. wow, some of those low ones are really surprising... I would have figured Memphis, WF, Michigan State would all have more

never thought much of this paper tiger....knew they'd be exposed but didn't think it'd be this soon. There's much better in the ACC
2/27/2008 12:11:01 AM
What are the teams listed on the right of the year on those teams who won but weren't ranked #1 at all during the year? They surely aren't runner-ups or anything because Duke didn't even make out of the Sweet 16 a bunch of the years they are listed... I assume it's #1 in the last pre-tourney poll? Though I thought UConn was in 2006?** nevermind.. i see it now.[Edited on February 27, 2008 at 12:22 AM. Reason : x]

they definately can get a #1 seed, but i think it's a huge stretch to say they'd have to lose 5 in a row to lose the #1 seed. They could lose 1-2 and wouldnt get the #1 seed
2/27/2008 9:19:44 AM
^ agreedif they lose to Kentucky this weekend they'll probably drop from a locked #1 seed
2/27/2008 9:51:45 AM
2/27/2008 9:58:49 AM
^^^ just going by everything I have read/heard. Already had the #2 SOS, BEFORE playing Memphis and Vandy. Will only go up with Kentucky and Florida... have beat 3 of the top 10 teams... I think Memphis will get a #1 obviously, Carolina will get one, and UCLA. That leaves one spot, Kansas keeps losing, Xavier wont get it, only team I could see is Texas or MAYBE Duke if they beat Carolina and go really deep in the ACC tourney.
2/27/2008 10:14:39 AM
if Duke wins out the rest of the season (beating GTech at home tonight, at State on saturday, at Virginia next week - all very winnable games), and then beats UNC again.. i don't see how UNC could get a #1 bid over them, unless Duke loses in the first round of the ACC tournament
