the only unc fans who think nc state isn't a rival is the fans who haven't been paying attention long or close enough to notice (which unsurprisingly, is most of them)

why?? i don't know any teams that walk out on the court and are like hey whats up. i don't care who wins this. all acc teams are definitely rivals. maybe they aren't ultimate rivals like duke/carolina, but they're still rivals. you can't sit there and pretend you don't care about another team because they aren't a rival. everyone is a rival on some level. and being in the same conference sortof ups the rivalry.

all acc teams are opponents, not necessarily rivals. just b/c you're playing another team doesn't make it a rivalry. kinda dilutes the important of a rivalry compared to just a regular game.

it's the carolina fans that care about the rivalry with state... the ones that never went there or have much of any other reason except they liked the color and they win a lot

Problem being, "paying attention long or close enough to notice". The longer we go without being competetive in the ACC, the more that number of people drops. Hell, I'd wager to say that the majority of current students don't think of us as a rival *unless* their parents/older relatives are UNC alumni or fans.

I would think the typical wal*mart fan would be less likely to care about State as a rival, since they are driven by what's popular/newsworthy and we're usually neither. Unless that was a backhanded attempt to associate wal*mart shoppers with State somehow...

UNC fans say we arent their rival b/c it makes them feel superior. we are their rival, but unfortuantley we arent giving them any competiton right now. I went to the bar last night for the game with alot of NCSU and UNC alums and there was definitley animosity on both sides

meh, I dunno about this whole "state isn't our rival" thing. That seems like something that some uninformed, sophmoric, carilina bigot would say.

Hell, I still get taunt filled phone calls and IMs from friends (carolina alum) on game day. Given that when I attended state, the presence of a rivalry was much stronger. When football season was in play, there was no doubt that we would spank carolina.
When basketball season was in play, there was about a 50/50 chance of us walking away with a W. You honestly didn't know who would win.
