1991 MR2 Turbo

dont buy it
2/20/2008 4:49:27 PM
hey remember my "would you buy a modified car" thread? This might be somebody's halfassed/half finished project car that they got tired of or couldn't afford to finish. what really concerns me is the claimed electrical problems. often the main source of electrical gremlins is installer error... you have no idea what kind of ghetto shit you will find when you start pulling things apart. And if he halfassed that, who knows what else is ghetto? You just don't want to spend a bunch of money and time fixing his mistakes.the parts themselves look good on paper though, except engine management. Is an SAFC enough for a reliable tune on those cars? cheap engine management + a bad piston ring just doesn't sound good to me.oh and I have two 550 cc injectors if you want them (they are off my Rx-7, top feed, high impedence). just need o-rings and pintle caps.[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 5:02 PM. BOOM
2/20/2008 5:01:05 PM
i wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft. pole, at least not for $6k. that's a lot to spend on a car that needs an engine rebuild and has major electrical issues.^^yeah, the safc is more or less just a band aid. it's an excellent budget option for a mild car and can even safely be used on wilder setups but it's far from optimal once you get to a certain point.
2/20/2008 5:07:46 PM
Dude.Just buy it.You'll only make a mistake like that once in your life and then you'll never have to post these terrible threads again.Remember when Smoothcrim bought that sweet modified Eclipse that proceeded to fall apart and sit in pieces for a few years? You're due.
2/20/2008 5:09:10 PM
^^ nigro answer my PM about my clutch
2/20/2008 5:14:35 PM

history doomed to repeat itself...

How does the guy know it needs rings? I mean, it could just have a bent valve. At best you're pulling the head and replacing a valve. Could require machine work or a new head if it's cracked. If that's not it then it could just take rings or more depending on whether or not the cylinder walls are scored. But that's a $2k car until it gets fixed IMO.
2/20/2008 6:58:24 PM
skack brings up a good point. did he do a leak down test to verify rings? head can be more expensive than block work depending on the motor and part availability

2/20/2008 7:02:13 PM
T67 + 550cc = fail
2/20/2008 7:29:21 PM
a totally ghetto color too.
2/20/2008 7:30:02 PM
dude even if that car was done right, its not the right car for you.you cant handle 300hp. not anytime soon either.honestly, you just need a civic. my GF has a 2000 civic EX 5spd for sale.
2/20/2008 9:05:08 PM
dont get it bro...has a small back seat area
2/20/2008 9:09:59 PM
even in a BEST case scenario where you could just go ghetto and slap some rings on that one piston, you're still tearing the motor down to do it. there's a very slight chance it's something in the valvetrain that could be fixed fairly easy/cheap like a screwed spring or something, but that's one hell of a chance without some legit verification/documentation.that yellow one looks like a much better option.
2/20/2008 9:11:51 PM
^^^ heymy dicksuck itI'm not looking for a monster, but then again I wouldn't mind something fun to drive. I might even take it out to the track on those "discount" days .
2/20/2008 9:17:14 PM
300hp mid engine caryou will kill yourself with your driving record on here.
2/20/2008 9:45:28 PM
its only 6 grand, a new car depreciates that in a year and nobody seems to mind.if it is what you want, go for it.its just money.
2/20/2008 10:21:33 PM
Looks like something a chick would drive.
2/20/2008 10:22:39 PM
looks like a headache with that list of issuesits your money, but I wouldn't touch itkeep looking

2/20/2008 10:39:46 PM
im not trying to make fun of you. im just saying from what i have read on here with your problems with mr2s, i would say not to get it. its much much much more power than anything youve driven and its in a real sloppy car.and im sure only a slim percentage of people on here could actually make that car do what they want.
2/20/2008 10:42:40 PM
Yeah, I know. After looking over the problems and what they would cost, I'm not considering it. If you really want to talk me out of something, though:http://www.mr2trader.com/index.php?a=2&b=2121
2/20/2008 10:47:16 PM
Why don't you buy a good car instead?
2/20/2008 10:48:30 PM
Because I don't see what's so bad about it?
2/20/2008 10:51:26 PM
what about an audi TT- awd and turbo.2001 is in your pricerange
2/20/2008 10:57:29 PM
Well, it's almost 20 years old, it's had extensive modifications, it has a fucked up electrical system, it's almost 20 years old, needs engine work, he didn't list the mileage but I'm guessing it's over 100k, it's been repainted so there's a serious possibility that body work was done that he didn't mention, it's almost 20 years old....and he's asking 6k for it.[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 11:16 PM. have you considered that MR2s, while neat cars, are a terrible bang for the buck?you can get a really nice turbo Miata from the early to mid 90s for much less than $10k...parts are plentiful as shit, and you will be at least a little less likely to back it into a ditch.for that matter, as much as i like crazy tuner sports cars, i wouldn't spend $10k on a '93 MR2 unless it had a blowjob socket or a hundred dollar bill printer. I'd much rather spend just a little more and get a clean AP1 S2000.[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 11:32 PM. Reason : asdf]

haha, no i'm 28and a half.
2/20/2008 11:32:45 PM
some people will live and learn.others will just keep trying and spending $$.that said, matt, its your money and you can get whatever you want. but just take everything said in this thread as advice.if you want the car, get it, but do not come on here bitching and complaining when something goes wrong and you want to take the guy to court.in the endnone of us on here will be happy.

I love the way the seller of that car tries to mask the fact that it needs a motor rebuild by stating that it merely needs 'piston rings for cylinder 1'....That thing's a fuckin unit. Stay far, far away.
2/21/2008 11:12:56 AM
besides the engine stuff that has been well stated, I can't overstate how awful that paint job is.
