Question:How long after an inspection expires can you go without penalty.Situation: My car's inspection expired in Jan. The car hasn't been running since last Oct., otherwise I would have gotten it done a month or two before. I had thought I'd get the car up and running in time by the end of Jan, but that failed. I'm going today. Is there a penalty being 27 days late?I know it says:3. Sticker Rule for Emissions Counties:(a) If the registration is current and the sticker is current, inspectthe vehicle.(b) If the registration is expired, or there is no registration card, or notag and the emission inspection sticker is expired by more than fourmonths, inspect the vehicle.(c) If there is no inspection sticker on the vehicle, contact your localDMV Inspector/Auditor to request the current compliance date ofthe sticker.(d) If the registration is expired and the sticker is expired by less thanfour months, do not inspect the vehicle. The consumer must renewthe registration before the vehicle may be inspected. But I don't have to do emissions. (1985 Porsche, even with the 1995 engine)I know about the 30day period for an inspection failure. But I just simply have an expired one. [Edited on February 27, 2008 at 12:38 PM. Reason : .]

i think after 2.5 or 3 months they actually threaten to fine you, or they may jut fine you.ive been weeks after the expiration. heck, maybe even 2 months after.as long as the registration is current and it will pass, its no big deal. they will just make is expire in Jan, instead of Feb.

Cool. Registration is up to date. Thanks baonest, I appreciate it.

yah, as long as you havnt gotten a letter in the mail from the dmv, you should be good to go.
2/27/2008 1:03:06 PM
even if you get a letter they give you an obscenely long time to get it done after the letter 30-60 daysand once its 4 months out they fine youive had the letter twice
2/27/2008 1:06:31 PM
yah, it actually is a long time if you think about it.we have came pretty close. but we called in a couple of times.i think one time we had to surrender our plate for 30 days.but they give you some options i think. i dont remember and i dont want to either.

as much of a pain as it is...some people are just car stupidthere is a 318i in apartment complex that has completely bald rear tireslike 1000 more miles and we are going to see cord

I watched a truck get stuck trying to get into the bojangle parking lot yesterday in the rain.No tread and an open diff meant that it was sitting on the hill spinning its tire, while backing up traffic on western.

ok, so: ive read through the document that ngr bnst posted and havent come across an answer: for NC*- is a grille necessary?- what's the regulations on lifted vehicles? (body compared to tire coverage/mud flaps/etc.)- is tread depth 3/32 or is it based on the wear bars?
11/3/2009 8:00:48 PM
first two questions have nothing to do with state inspectionsto answer the third- minimum tread depth is 2/32 (1/16)
11/3/2009 8:07:36 PM
no shit?do i have to have a grille for any other reason?
11/3/2009 8:08:37 PM
but if your tires have cracks or dry rotting you can fail as well. even if they have 9/32s
11/3/2009 8:27:29 PM
grill not needed for anything but cosmetics.
11/4/2009 1:25:12 AM
lemme see yo grill
11/5/2009 7:35:14 AM
^stop padding
11/5/2009 9:49:44 AM
your tires have to damn near have the belt showing to not pass in nc
11/9/2009 8:57:37 AM
So, Im guessing/hoping that a windshield isn't necessary to pass a safety Inspection in NC?
11/9/2009 9:07:51 AM
actually, yes it is
11/9/2009 4:18:29 PM
I searched the entire book for the word windshield, and this is the only section that pertained.19A NCAC 03D .0536 WINDSHIELD WIPER1. Windshield wipers shall not be approved if:(a) The vehicle is not equipped with a windshield wiper or wipers, provided the vehicle has a windshield.(b) The wiper or wipers do not operate freely.(c) The wiper controls are not so constructed and located that the drivermay operate them.(d) The wiper or wipers are not adequate to clean rain, snow and othermatter from the windshield.(e) Parts of blades or arms are missing or show evidence of damage.(f) Windshields that are cracked and impedes wiper blade operation.[Wipers on rear windows are not part of the safetyinspection.]History Note: Authority G.S. 20-2; 20-39; 20-183.3(5);Eff. October 1, 1994.Nowhere did it say that a windshield was required?[Edited on November 9, 2009 at 4:27 PM. Reason : g]

your window can be all busted up as long as it doesnt cut the wiperblade and isnt tinted below the as1 line
11/9/2009 9:09:37 PM
Im talking about NOT HAVING a windshield
11/9/2009 9:45:05 PM
nope you just need a clear shield that the wipers can clean with no streaks. from my experience
11/9/2009 11:22:05 PM
The vehicle does NOT have to have a windshield. The wipers have to work IF it has a windshield
11/10/2009 12:26:10 AM
he will probably still get some bubba that doesnt know that
11/11/2009 8:43:50 AM
I know a guy that does my inspections, but I wouldn't wanna pressure him to pass something illegal. (older guy, doesnt need the $$ bad enough to pass illegal cars, and wouldn't bother with it) I just hope that I can get him to agree that it fits within the wording of the law
11/11/2009 8:57:05 AM
just get Jeepman to give him a tugjob first
