Quote :
"Who has the audacity to demand unarmed helplessness? Who likes dead good guys?

I'll tell you who. People who tramp on the Second Amendment, that's who. People who refuse to accept the self-evident truth that free people have the God-given right to keep and bear arms, to defend themselves and their loved ones. People who are so desperate in their drive to control others, so mindless in their denial that they pretend access to gas causes arson, Ryder trucks and fertilizer cause terrorism, water causes drowning, forks and spoons cause obesity, dialing 911 will somehow save your life, and that their greedy clamoring to "feel good" is more important than admitting that armed citizens are much better equipped to stop evil than unarmed, helpless ones.

Pray for the families of victims everywhere, America. Study the methodology of evil. It has a profile, a system, a preferred environment where victims cannot fight back. Embrace the facts, demand upgrade and be certain that your children's school has a better plan than Virginia Tech or Columbine. Eliminate the insanity of gun-free zones, which will never, ever be gun-free zones. They will only be good guy gun-free zones, and that is a recipe for disaster written in blood on the altar of denial. I, for one, refuse to genuflect there."

Ted's right. Gun laws only stop law abiding citizens from getting access to weapons. If someone really, really wants one they can get one. It's actually a hell of a lot quicker and easier to get a gun illegally than it is to get one legally. I bet you I could have one before the end of the night and I don't know anyone special.

Disarming the populace is not the way to stop violent crime.

Sure, after you wait 1-2 weeks to get your pistol permit from the sheriff's dept.

But that's in NC, which is a relatively gun friendly state. Go try to buy a pistol in NY, it takes 6-8 months just to get your pistol permit. In many cases the background check required to buy a pistol is more extensive than the background check given to say... run a daycare, or become a teacher.

It's a bit ass backwards if you ask me. Guns, just like hammers, forks, or computers are only tools and are not in any way evil in and of themselves. The issue is not the tool, it's how it is used.

look i'm in no way opposed to guns. but i like to be objective about everything as much as possible.

and i hate this rationale:

its a completely disingenuous comparison. who would you rather square off against, a dude holding a fork or a dude holding a .45? i understand the point you're trying to make, but there are better ways to validate gun ownership than this.

cars kill more people than guns.

Are cars more evil, or at least as evil, as guns?

Would you rather face off against a guy with a gun, or a guy in a hummer?

Not disingenuous at all. I'm talking about purchasing. The attitude seems to be that since guns can clearly only be used to evil (insert giant roll eyes here) we should make them as difficult as possible to obtain legally.

I'm all for throwing the fucking book at people who use guns to commit crimes, but let's place the blame squarely where it belongs, on the the person committing the crime. I'm not even morally opposed to background checks, I don't think we should be arming people who have a criminal history, but buying a gun should not be more difficult than adopting a child.

Yes! Northern Illinois University has the advantage of being located in a smaller city with lower crime rates than more populous communities. But even in this relatively secure environment, people must act responsibly to ensure their own well-being. For more information, see our Safety & Security on Campus site. "

that's if they approve your permit at all. if you are rejected, which you can be for any reason at all, filing an appeal takes months - and even then you aren't guaranteed approval as a law abiding citizen.

It's sad that it makes me really glad to be almost completely done with ever stepping foot on campus again. If I come back for my MBA (in the classroom, not online)... I'm coming armed.

Exactly what I'm trying to say. Gun laws don't stop criminals, they just make it harder for the peaceful, law abiding citizen who wants to be able to defend himself from doing just that.

Disarming the populace is step one if you want to be a tyrant. The 2nd amendment was created so that the King of England couldn't come over and push us around, or so that the citizenry would not be at the mercy of the government.

Three things I will teach my children (if I ever have any):

1. Financial literacy
2. Self Defense (both armed and unarmed)
3. Basic survival/first aid skills

I agree people have the right to own firearms, but it's a little ridiculous to think that people should be able to carry one around with them on campus. People would be waving the goddamn things around everywhere. there would be more problems than there are now, thats for sure.

I'm not against gun use either...but my argument to this statement

Quote :
"Guns, just like hammers, forks, or computers are only tools and are not in any way evil in and of themselves. The issue is not the tool, it's how it is used"

there are differences between guns and other objects that you mentioned if they are used for wepons...the other objects have uses other than destroying things. The only thing a gun is used for is to destroy things. It could be a deer that you are hunting, a clay bird, a paper target, or a person. No matter what you use a gun for it will destroy something. (That's why they always say never point a gun at something/someone you don't entend on destroying)

WTF

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23220774-663,00.html

Quote :
"A FORMER student armed with a shotgun and two handguns opened fire in a lecture hall at an Illinois university, killing five and injuring 16 others before killing himself.

It was the fifth US school shooting in a week.

The black-clad gunman calmly stepped out from behind a curtain at the front of the lecture hall minutes before a geology class ended yesterday, officials and witnesses said.

Screams filled the hall at Northern Illinois University, west of Chicago, as the gunman unleashed a hail of bullets that left the room awash with blood.

"It started and ended within a matter of seconds," university police chief Donald Grady said.

Police were in the room within two minutes of getting the call, but did not have time to fire a shot as the gunman was already dead on the stage.

"We have no apparent motive at this time," Chief Grady said.

University president John Peters said there had been a "very brief rapid-fire assault that ended with the gunman taking his own life".

He said those killed by the gunman were all students - four women and one man.

Six victims remained in critical condition, hospital officials said.

Student Zach Seward described scenes of terror inside the hall as people tried to escape.

"As I was running, I just kept waiting for something to hit me in the back. I didn't know where to run. Tried to decide where it was safe to be, and there wasn't anywhere safe," he said.

A witness named Sheila said: "He was aiming towards the crowd but I don't think he was aiming at a specific person.

"He was quiet. He just stood on the stage in front of everybody and just started shooting.

"I saw him holding the gun and it was huge. I thought it was fake and then I realised he was really shooting at people and I got down. I saw a lot of blood. I have blood all over my clothes."

Authorities said the gunman was enrolled as a graduate student in sociology last year and then transferred to another state institution.

Mr Peters said the gunman did not have any record of police contact or a prior arrest record.

The massacre follows school shootings in Ohio, Louisiana, Tennessee and California that left five dead.

It comes 10 months after 32 students and staff were shot down by a mentally disturbed student at Virginia Tech University in the deadliest massacre ever at a US school.

Northern Illinois University was placed on a security alert in December after police found threats on a bathroom wall laced with racial slurs, references to the Virginia Tech shooting and a warning that "things will change most hastily" in the final days of the semester.

But Mr Peters said he did not think the shootings were related to the threats and said that while security had been heightened there was not much more officials could have done.

"I don't know of any plan that can prevent this tragedy," he said. "Unless we lock every door, I don't know how we can keep people out."

One student told local radio that about 140 students were in the hall when the man opened fire.

Ambulances swarmed on to the snow-covered campus and classes were cancelled for the rest of the day.

"Some girl got hit in the eye, a guy got hit in the leg," George Gaynor, who was inside, said.

The issue was his medication
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i72zWlWRLvc1ejGI5WpefItEjKCAD8UQS7A81

Quote :
"DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — The man who gunned down five people at Northern Illinois University in a suicidal rampage became erratic after halting his medication and carried a shotgun to campus inside a guitar case, police said Friday.

The man, 27-year-old former student Stephen Kazmierczak, was also wielding three handguns during Thursday's ambush inside a lecture hall.

Two of the weapons — the pump-action Remington shotgun and a Glock 9mm handgun — were purchased legally less than a week ago, on Feb. 9, authorities said. They were purchased in Champaign, where Kazmierczak was enrolled at the University of Illinois.

The other weapons were still being traced.

The gunman's father, Robert Kazmierczak, briefly came out of his house in Lakeland, Fla., to talk to reporters.

"Please leave me alone. ... This is a very hard time for me," he said as he threw his arms up and wept. He declined further comment about his son and then went back inside his house, saying he was diabetic.

Campus Police Chief Donald Grady said investigators recovered 48 shell casings and six shotgun shells following the attack in Cole Hall. The gunman paused to reload his shotgun after opening fire on a crowd of terrified students in a geology class, sending them running and crawling toward the exits. He shot himself to death on the stage of the hall.

Kazmierczak, whose first name was earlier listed as Steven, was taking some kind of medication, Grady said.

"He had stopped taking medication and become somewhat erratic in the last couple of weeks," Grady said, declining to name the drug or provide other details.

Correcting information his office released earlier Friday, DeKalb County Coroner Rusty Miller said five students, not six, were killed in the rampage, in addition to the gunman. Miller said the higher victim total was the result of confusion over the fate of a patient taken to another county for treatment.

"There was a miscommunication," Miller said.

The motive of the killer, who graduated from NIU in 2006 but was a student there as recently as last year, was still not known. Grady said Kazmierczak was an "outstanding" student while at NIU and authorities were still trying to determine why he would kill. There was no known suicide note.

"We were dealing with a disturbed individual who intended to do harm on this campus," NIU President John Peters said.

Witnesses said the gunman, dressed in black and wearing a stocking cap, emerged from behind a screen on the stage of 200-seat Cole Hall and opened fire just as the class was about to end around 3 p.m. Officials said 162 students were registered for the class but it was unknown how many were there Thursday.

Allyse Jerome, 19, a sophomore from Schaumburg, said the gunman burst through a stage door and pulled out a gun.

"Honestly, at first everyone thought it was a joke," Jerome said. Everyone hit the floor, she said. Then she got up and ran, but tripped. She said she felt like "an open target."

"He could've decided to get me," Jerome said. "I thought for sure he was gonna get me."

John Giovanni, 20, of Des Plaines said the gunman calmly fired at the greatest concentration of students.

"He was shooting from the hip. He was just shooting," said Giovanni, who turned and ran so fast that he lost a shoe. "I was running but I was hurtling over people in the fetal position."

Peters said four people died at the scene, including three students and the gunman. The others died at hospitals. The teacher, a graduate student, was wounded but was expected to recover.

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis J. Miller released the identities of four victims: Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester; Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero; Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville; and Julianna Gehant, 32, of Meridan.

Another victim, Gayle Dubowski, a 20-year-old sophomore from Carol Stream, died at a Rockford hospital, Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said.

The killer had been a graduate student in sociology at Northern Illinois as recently as spring 2007, Peters said. He also said the suspect had no record of police contact or an arrest record while attending Northern Illinois, a campus with 25,000 students about 65 miles west of Chicago.

The gunman was a student at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Chancellor Richard Herman said.

Lauren Carr said she was sitting in the third row when she saw the shooter walk through a door on the right-hand side of the stage, pointing a gun straight ahead.

"I personally Army-crawled halfway up the aisle," said Carr, a 20-year-old sophomore. "I said I could get up and run or I could die here."

She said a student in front of her was bleeding, "but he just kept running."

"I heard this girl scream, 'Run, he's reloading the gun!'"

More than a hundred students cried and hugged as they gathered outside the Phi Kappa Alpha house early Friday to remember Parmenter, the 20-year-old sophomore from Elmhurst, who was one of those killed.

The campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents and were offered counseling at any residence hall, according to the school Web site.

The school was closed for one day during final exam week in December after campus police found threats, including racial slurs and references to shootings earlier in the year at Virginia Tech, scrawled on a bathroom wall in a dormitory. Police determined after an investigation that there was no imminent threat and the campus was reopened. Peters said he knew of no connection between that incident and Thursday's attack.
