This is the info, my wife drives a '99 Buick Century V6 with 121k miles and about 2 months ago informed me when she filled the car up, it would click to say it's full, then spew out a significant amount of gas from the tank. I told her to try a different station next time. She did, same problem. So now I've been filling up the tank the past 4 or 5 times and it has done it to me every single time. Different station each time, I've tried holding it by hand and on the automatic hold thing. I've even tried having the pump 1/4 to 1/2 the way out versus all the way in and still the same problem. Today, I held it by hand and as soon as it sounded like it should be done I stopped it and it still spewed, but not as much.Is there something inside the tank that somehow regulates when the pump should shut off?

The shut off for the pump is in the handle of the pump. Not sure how exactly it works, but it isn't controlled by your gas tank, it's controlled by gas getting up to the tip of the nozzle. Other than that, I dunno what would cause that.

so how would i unclog the vent tube?

find the vent tube on the filler neck. take it off and clean it out with an air compressor, gasoline, a stiff wire, etc. put it back on.i've seen dirt dobbers build nests up in there if the car sat for a while, but i don't think that'd be the problem this time of year. checking for clogs/cleaning it out is worth a try.
