Hey all. I have a '99 V6 Accord with some issues that I need to get checked out. I have guys back home that I trust but I don't want to get stuck away from Raleigh without a car for a week if it can't be fixed right away. Does anyone know of some Honda specialists that they trust not to screw them over? I looked up the one on Chapel Hill Rd called Honda Specialists Inc. but I don't know anything about them. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks for any help!

Heh..I've taken it to my guys AND the dealer for their little computer test and both couldn't tell me anything. There is a tapping/knocking sound (valve tap? bad lift cylinder?) that sounds like it is deeper in the engine and I have bad acceleration. I don't think it is shifting correctly so there could be a transmission issue that could somehow be making the tapping sounds (?). The idle is also rough now...I think whatever the problem is it is getting worse. The transmission was replaced before and only has like 90,000 miles on it or something like that. The dealer said I might have to get a whole new engine (WTF?!) while my guys said they were crazy and have never heard of having to totally replace a '99 V6 engine (they all worked for Honda for 8+ years). I first noticed the poor acceleration when I tried to merge on the highway and couldn't get up to 60mph very quickly. The check engine light came on and the codes were saying that there was a a misfire issue on the back 3 spark plug bridge (thats when I took it to my guys/Honda to get it looked at). Then the tapping showed up and the acceleration/idle is getting worse...

ARG! That enough issues for you guys Thanks all for any help.

I always took mine to Pinnacle Automotive. The owner has been a certified Honda master tech since the mid 80's, and the rates are very reasonable, although it has been a while since I've gone to them. They do quality repairs and always treated me great. Used to be in Apex but I guess they've moved to Holly Springs.

those V6 trannies were known for being replaced. a few of the nigs on here have had them replaced on the their TLs. but who knows.
perhaps bearing wear. which would suck
5spd or auto?

how many miles.
if its high mileage, dont be surprised by sounds from the engine.

you could do valve adjustment
thicker oil to see if problems stops

you could do all this yourself, along with plug change, fuel filter change, wire change.

automatic, ~150,000mi (no engine tap before taking it in for the engine light issue), new plugs (tried new wires, didn't help), tried new distributor cap (nothing changed)...

i dont think they made the v6 accord in 5spd because it would have had better performance numbers versus the prelude

so the engine light was for the mis fire?

i would still do a valve adjustment and also check the injectors. the injectors tick, not real loud or anything. but it could cause the problem.

Yeah the light was for the misfire which I think is probably causing my poor acceleration problem but I think they checked the injectors and everything was ok...and the ticking is more of a knocking so its loud.

get your guys to find out where its coming from.

knock is most likely from the bottom end.

might have to rebuild the motor.
check the knock sensor. the CEL can come on because of that. it can also result in poor gas mileage and performance

The misfire on my S2000 turned out to be a bent valve. I've been meaning to update that thread. /message_topic.aspx?topic=505914

did the knocking happen when the check engine light came on?

or only after you got it back from the shop?

I didn't hear the tap until after i took it in...they didn't do anything except change the oil that day and my wipers...They didn't mess with anything that would cause the tap in the engine unless they screwed up the oil or something.

^Couch? what did it look like?

not the 4 auto. very few 4 auto's were ever replaced. pretty much the 5 auto TL trans were the culprit.

i'm perplexed at the knocking of the engine. unless it wasn't taken care of.
