http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3240117Had his throat cut by a skate. Glad he's still alive.

I was surprised he had the awareness to hold his neck and get over to the bench so quickly. Glad he's in stable condition.
2/11/2008 9:02:54 AM
seriously. that's a scary injury, glad to hear he's ok.
2/11/2008 9:11:51 AM
For those who say a thread is worthless without pictures, again, glad he's alive.
2/11/2008 9:12:08 AM
good to hear he is doing oki am honestly surprised that this doesn't happen more often, at least bad cuts from skates (not necessarily the neck), than it does. esp. with all of the pile-ups that happen around the nets and things like that
2/11/2008 9:33:32 AM
search "hockey throat" on youtube and watch the one where the goalie gets his throat slit by the skatethere wasn't a trail of blood, just a pool
2/11/2008 10:35:09 AM
in that instance the guy didnt get up and try to get off the ice immediately thoughthey had stablized the goalie and awaited a stretcher to get to him as opposed to what happened last nightscary shit all around though
2/11/2008 10:38:56 AM
Glad he is okay.
2/11/2008 12:57:52 PM
If this happens in a local beer league, or anywhere outside of the pros, the guy dies on the ice. Crazy shit.

2/11/2008 1:32:23 PM
I think stabilized wasnt the word i was going for therehe was far from stable, and not immobilized eitherjust more instructed to wait where he was laying as opposed to skating off
2/11/2008 4:16:23 PM
I can't believe the guy got up and SKATED to the bench? You'd think that all that blood loss would result in him passing out immediately.Good thing he's ok.
2/11/2008 4:45:06 PM
that was some foul shit
2/11/2008 5:01:21 PM
i just heard on PTI that the same doctor that performed surgery on kevin everett performed surgery on zednikthats absolutely insane
2/11/2008 5:37:38 PM
^ that doctor is a pimp - those are completely different operations.Anyway the trail of blood on the ice was just plain
2/11/2008 5:48:16 PM
yeah that was nuts, im surprised that doesn't happen more often....but the goalie back in the 80s was worse.

What's funny is when you read the comments, people think this shit is fake. Amazing. This world is fully of idiots.

^^^^Sorry, I'm retarded. The first time I saw the accident with Malarchuk, it creeped me the fuck out. I don't really follow hockey , but shouldn't this happen more often? Do most players wear throat guards now?[Edited on February 12, 2008 at 8:20 AM. Reason : .]
2/12/2008 8:20:20 AM
i just watched the video of the malarchuk incident and it made me queasy. (i had heard about it before, but never seen it) it's amazing these guys are still alive.
2/12/2008 8:30:38 AM
^^ general trend: people will only wear the gear they are required to. Less gear means lighter means faster means more comfortable you might make a play you wouldnt otherwise have made.[Edited on February 12, 2008 at 8:31 AM. Reason : ^^]
2/12/2008 8:31:21 AM
given my situation, i'd rather have a little extra protection and not have to fear that injury. then again, i'm not a professional hockey player.
2/12/2008 8:45:11 AM
to a degree, but throat protectors are typically pretty cumbersome. Great for a goalie, but for someone who has to look over their shoulder more often, throat protectors can get in the way[Edited on February 12, 2008 at 9:18 AM. Reason : s]
2/12/2008 9:17:29 AM
yeah, i definitely agree there. i would only wear one in goal too, i thought that's what we were talking about.there is the opportunity for that kind of injury to happen to anyone, but to your point, if i were anywhere on the ice other than in goal, a neck guard would be way too prohibitive.[Edited on February 12, 2008 at 9:23 AM. Reason : spelling.]
2/12/2008 9:22:58 AM
They talked a bout a goalie but i was answering the question
2/12/2008 10:06:45 AM
I know a few hundred adult hockey players, and only one skater wears a neck guard. I know two goalies who wear the type that would actually prevent a skate cut, but most (including me) only wear the lexan type that protects against pucks.A long time ago, I was covering a puck and a stick got lifted up under my neck and cut me. It was nothing like a skate cut, but I tried wearing a neck guard for a little while and couldn't deal with it. My dad is still pissed that I refuse to wear one; he called me to complain about it again immediately after the Zednik thing happened.Other than maybe a dozen goalies, I don't know anyone in the NHL who wears a cut-proof neck guard. ]

when I was growing up, neckguards were mandatorythe technology got to a point where you could barely notice they were on due to the lack of weight
