Anyone from Detroit or know it well? I'm driving up there for the weekend- looking for suggestions for good places to eat/stuff to do. Will be going to the Kid Rock concert on Fri. night at the Joe Louis Arena- I expect that to be crazy. I pretty much eat sleep and breathe cars- so i figure it shouldn't be too hard to find things of interest.

Suggestions? (other than don't go, or you'll get shot)

decent food in greektown.

henry ford museum

other than that, detroit pretty much sucks. its basically one giant ghetto. it is indeed the armpit of the US. hope you're driving a rental.

ann arbor is ok, i'd reccomend heading over there if you're looking for non-touristy non-chain good places to eat. and the university of michigan is there.

thanks for the suggestions... no rental- taking my busted 95 civic with 220k miles on it- hopefully it'll be left alone. i'm thinking about driving over into canada for a bit- as long as the whole customs deal doesn't take too long

i've been in detroit a few times before when i was doing long-haul truck driving.. had a dude try to truckjack (put a gun up to the window) me near the chrysler assy. plant just north of downtown. fun times

if you are driving your pos civic, you may do yourself a favor to take it there.

Seriously, I'd like to go there out of curiousity.

From what I've seen, downtown actually has a lot of neat 20's and 30's buildings, and personally I have a morbid fascination with some of the grand old derelict buildings (Michigan Central Station, Lee Plaza, abandoned victorian mansions in Brush Park, etc.) However I expect I'd be too scared of getting jacked up to actually do more than drive by any of them, if even that.

so far so good... staying at the riverfront sheraton- roamed around downtown for a few hours, it dosen't seem so sketchy right here.

triip was a success... and a blast

right at 1400 miles round trip (from hendersonville) averaged 40.2mpg

now i've got my old road-trip itch back... hadn't gone anywhere in a couple of years and forgot how much i loved it... thinking about heading to alaska this summer
