What is the appropriate thing to do with an old wedding band? Why keep it? It just seems shady to put it in your fire safe so that it is protected. I know a bunch of people who have been married previously and none of them have kept the wedding bands. They have melted them down, thrown them out, sold them etc. What do you all think?

Why don't you ask him? It's not our damn business. It's almost not yours but since you're curious and he's your boyfriend you can probably ask him what it means to him.

Not everybody just throws stuff like that away.

^^^ Has a good point.

Uh I care. I should rephrase the subject. He's not exactly 'new' boyfriend. More like serious boyfriend who has discussed marriage with me. It's a symbol of his ex and I dislike that.

yeah really

Everyone is entitled to how they feel, but this kinda rubs me the wrong way i guess.
That's a part of HIS life that has NOTHING to do with you. Don't make it into an issue when there is nothing to make an issue about.
Is he still seeing her?
Does he still have feelings for her?
If he is your serious boyfriend and y'all are talking about getting married, he obviously cares about YOU.
Don't start shit where there isn't any.

Way to be a bitch.

I picked out my wedding band with a lot of thought, and if something happened and my wife left me, I'd have a hard time. I'd get over it, but I also wouldn't just toss my ring. I'd stop wearing it, but I like it and would keep it.

As long as he has no more feelings for her, then why does it matter? Did you give back every piece of jewelry one of your ex's gave you? Probably not. So stop being a cunt and accept him for who he is and that is part of his past.

you know, that's how problems start (and its typically the female), by someone getting upset over something that does not matter.

if you're concerned that he still has feelings for her, then that is the real problem. not a ring.

Is his ex dead? I'd keep my band. Does he have kids? Young kids see themselves in the wedding band - it's a part of daddy's hand. My 2 yr. old daughter spins mine around my finger all the time, wouldn't understand my removing it even in the case of divorce (try explaining that one). I'd keep it on just for that reason, and I don't care how great you think you are. She wins. There's a hell of a lot of family symbolism in the wedding band. Family is hard to undo.

Then again, it could also be a reminder of what not to do next time, like marry someone so possessive she can't think of what a wedding ring might mean to someone aside from her own petty self.

Are you overreacting? Probably.

Agreed... just because the marriage is over isn't a reason to get rid of a nice ring...

I'd keep a nice rock

Unless you have thrown away/given away/sold every single thing an ex has ever given you, then I'm afraid you are being a raging hypocrite right now.

So it seems shady to put monetarily valuable objects in a fire safe...

Work with me here. It's an object. A relatively valuable object. I know wedding bands don't break the bank, but gold is gold and having some around isn't a terrible idea just as an investment. The price of it is pretty stable, to the point that if human civilization collapsed right now, a gold wedding band would still be worth a couple of goats or something.

---

What this all boils down to is that you are insecure about the relationship. There are one of two possibilities here:

1) You have a good reason to be insecure, as he's done something real to make you wary. The relationship will probably fail.
2) You're just generally insecure about relationships regardless of what the guy does. The relationship will probably fail, as will any future ones until you get your act together.

Well guess what, you knew he had been married. He's loved another woman enough to marry her. That means a whole lot. He will always have feelings and memories of her adn their relationship.

You can go and guess what that rings means, but you honestly don't know, unless you ask him. Even if it is because of the love he had, get the fuck over it. Grow the fuck up.

All that matters now, is that you love each other.

nastoute apparently has very strong opinions about the subject that he doesn't want to share.

My ex-girlfriend gave me a computer chair and a wallet. I'm sitting on both at the moment. Now, admittedly, the chair and wallet don't have as much emotional significance as a ring, but then again the chair and wallet are in daily use, whereas the ring is locked up.

But what these things do all have in common is that they are objects, with a specific practical purpose. Chairs for sitting, wallets for holding beer money, and gold for retaining value.
