Pets are property. Some places have laws against cruelty to animals, but pets don't have rights, and the definition of cruelty is subjective. If this guy wants to take his cat surfing, he doesn't need the cat's consent, and he damn sure doesn't need your approval.

It isn't that they are animals, its that they are pets. When you take in a pet, you are saying you will be responsible, feeding and caring for it properly. A cow on the other hand, is raised for purposes of slaughter. It would be equally wrong to find a wild cow(if they existed) and chop its head off.

No, but it is a necessary adaptation that humans have made to sustain the current lifestyle that we do.
