I've never been to the western part of NC, and am interested in going to see some waterfalls. Any suggestion? around Boone area would be great, but I'm willing to drive out if it's worth a drive.

I think Linville falls and the falls at Chimney Rock are the two highest off the top of my head. Linville is about 130 ft tall. If you want really awesome falls go to Yosemite in the spring.

Over in Banner Elk there are the Elk River Falls that not many people know about...pretty good sized falls and lake in the bottom where people swim, picnic, hang out. Linville is nice, you will do some walking, but it is a pretty landscape. And like kinetix said most of the NC falls are in Brevard. Those two I have mentioned are the only ones I know of near Boone.

Lake Jacassee, SCHuge lake, four or five waterfalls. The deal is there is no building on the lake, and only one boat launch. There is a small campground with a couple cabins and tent spots. You can rent these kick ass pontoon boats and putt around for a weekend. If you have never gone skinnydipping behind an eighty foot waterfall, you haven't lived.

http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River_state-summary_state_NC_Look for anything class V to V+ with lots of gradient. That website has detailed directions and descriptions. My personal favorite is Bald River Falls near Tellico Plains, TN. But there are TONS of rivers and waterfalls in and around NC. This is the Mecca of steep creek kayaking.
