Shaq fits in the Suns' gameplan about as well as Vinny Testaverde would fit in the spread option

this must be some kind of crazy joke

The thought of this trade infuriates me.

I have a lot of money on the Suns to win the Championship, and this would be an absolute disaster.

How the fuck does Shaq help that team? He's a defensive liability like none other on a team that needs to improve their defense.

He's not healthy enough to assume he'll even be able to go in the playoffs.

He's a halfcourt player on an uptempo team.

He will absolutely ruin the spacing that is so vital to the pick&pop and give&go plays that Phoenix runs.

And they don't even get cap relief, what the fuck is this.

Aren't they trying to find someone who can defend Tim Duncan? Shaq is not that person. This would be a disaster for them.

is Marion in a contract year or something, and the Suns are afraid that they will get nothing for him in the offseason? this trade just seems ludicrous

Marion can opt out of his contract after this year and has said he wants out of town numerous times over the past year

They don't want to let him go for nothing

But Shaq is dead weight on half the teams in the league now

Other than Golden State, I can't think of a worse fit for him

This doesn't seem to make sense on any level for the suns. I've thought about it from every point of view, from salary cap, to future trade potential, etc etc, and it just doesn't seem logical. Shaq still has another year on his contract at like 20 million.. who would want that?

If the Heat pull this off it will be great for them.. salary relief so they can rebuild quickly

well actually the suns have no chance winning a championship the way they are right now. agaisnt the spurs they pretty much have to play halfcourt and marion disappears come playoff time so having shaq off the bench won't hurt at all. The question is will it help at all? plus gasol and bynum will eat amare and diaw

shaq off the bench isn't going to counter anything though, plus it is a huge gamble that he'll be able to do anything. He probably needs to take this whole year off get completly healthy and back in shape again and make another 2 year push like he did when he first got to miami.

again, just don't think it adds up except that as someone said they just need to get something for the guy and at least shaq is a nice name and a potential for some upside.

If we all agree that this trade is horrible, you'd think SOMEBODY in the Suns organization would think the same way

marion will fail anywhere else if he's asked to be a #2 threat on offense. Shaq will be tired and mess up the flow of the Suns offense. The suns will lose in the 1st round.

I'm trying to find some good in this trade...but its just not happening.

I guess I'm hoping that maybe Shaq will play with a little more "oomph" since he's on a team with the league's best record instead of the league's worst. And Marion did always disappear in the playoffs...and that's definitely all the Suns care about right now.

Shit...I just don't know.

I wouldn't even make this trade in a video game, where Shaq still has superman stats. He just doesn't fit with the Suns at all.

I'm trying to think of the logic from the Suns perspective. I guess they figure they only need 4 guys to run the break, and Shaq can still command the double team and distribute the ball to shooters in the halfcourt. Also they are looking to get something for Marion, but don't want him on another Western Conference team. They may think he can defend the big men better than Amare, but that is debatable. I guess it would at least take fouls away from from Amare when they match up with a Duncan.

Obviously the team will function quite differently when Shaq is on the court...he couldn't even run the floor when he was in shape. Maybe D'Antoni thinks that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

This potential move reeks of desperation, which is why I think I was initially so opposed to it. However, after thinking about it more and reading a few basketball writer's takes it doesn't seem completely unreasonable. Like ^that dude said, the Suns aren't running 5-man fast breaks so Shaq's limited mobility doesn't mean they can't push the ball. Also, when the Suns are in the half-court Shaq's presence does provide them with a new dynamic. He still commands double teams, which bodes well for perimeter shooters, and Nash and Stoudemire's pick-and-rolls will be harder to defend with a massive Shaq waiting for the extra pass.

I'm unsure of how the Suns replace Marion's defense and I hate to see any move that slows the team down at all, but at the same time if the goal is to win a championship and the Suns don't think they can do it as presently constructed then let them deal. I've read reports that both Nash and Stoudemire OK'D the trade. If this is true, then I say definitely do it.

Suns would really miss Marion every time they played a team who had a Joe Johnson or Luol Deng or Tayshaun Prince or Danny Granger other similar type player thats hard to match up with

^True, but most of the top-flight teams in the West don't have a tweener-slasher who leads their team.

Shaq was actually not that bad running the break during his prime in LA...when he wanted to.

As someone mentioned a few posts up, I'm also worried about them missing Marion's defensive presence. With the Suns lineup, he was always having to guard a really good PF or SF. But maybe with Shaq on the court, everyone will be actually guarding someone they should be matched up against. I think Diaw, Hill, and Bell should be able to fill Marion's defensive presence (which again, seemed to drop when the playoffs started). And Stoudemire won't be forced to guard Duncan and other bigs the whole game with Diaw coming in for relief and getting abused.

I am not sure which trade is worse - the Johan Santana trade for zero MLB ready players or this. Joke. Obviously this trade is worse. I do hope that Marion and Wade mesh and make the Heat entertaining to watch.

so the Heat are kind of trading Caron Butler and Lamar Odom for Shawn Marion, and getting a title thrown in the mix

It's not going to be quite as bad as you guys think. They'll miss the versatility on defense and somebody to finish on the break. I think the SUns could have gotten better value such as a trade with the nets for jefferson. They'll miss the hustle too. But they will make up for that in halfcourt defense. Shaq isn't a good defender and has never been that good. But amare is horrible, probably the worst in the league, Shaq is an upgrade as far as guarding bigs.

You don't pay over 20 million for a mentor

They got him to bang against Duncan, Yao, Bynum, Gasol and Boozer

Amare is actually a pretty poor defensive player

It just seems like they are narrowing their window of opportunity. Nash is already old, then they decide to add Grant Hill and Shaq? It should help around playoff time, but you have to wonder if Shaq will even be able to come back healthy this year.
