Well the thing making all the noise wasnt my hd, apparently it was the fan. When I turned it on, it booted but said "fan error". I have a ibm T42p. Is this something i can replace myself? If not where should I take it? Thanks

Call IBM/Lenovo support, tell them you need are a systems administrator and are getting a fan error in this laptop and need a new fan. Say that you've ruled out all other problems. They'll send you the fan, you install it. If you don't feel like installing it, I'm sure someone here can do it in about 5 mins or less.[Edited on February 1, 2008 at 1:14 PM. Reason : .]

Tell them you want to buy a fan. Or search for and buy one yourself.

yeah, my mom has an hp laptop and I just had to replace the fan in it. Too many fucking screws but other than that, it was pretty easy. You should be able to find an online manual for the laptop listing all the parts and procedures to replace them. Otherwise, you can just take it apart and get the part number off the fan.
