a) in April of 1992.

b) seen as resulting from the verdict of the Rodney King trial, a symbol of seething racial tension and perceived injustice.

c) way cool.

d) all of the above.

The veneer started popping up and cracking in those areas long ago. It should be no surprise when it finally fell off.

yeah and under the right conditions that could be anywhere

so the control exercised on society by various oppressive elements isn't actually as strong as it would have you believe

yeah I love the Grand Theft Auto games too but that doesn't mean it would be cool if somebody actually drove around the city shooting a tank and killing dozens of people in real life

whoops this is chit chat so yeah, i'd play the game and try to set a new fastest time for pulling Reginald Denny out of his truck

hell yes i would.

i mean, i listened to the subsequent 50 million gangsta rap albums that spawned from it

so why not swing my blatant consumerism into a different media venture

no... killing people is terribly wrong

however, this happened in the past
it can't be undone

I'm going to stand firm that the LA Riots are cool without glorifying the act of murder and without any intent to inflame or inspire further atrocity.

There were a lot of aggravating factors there that don't exist in most of society. The riots were mostly started by gangs who had a huge amount of control over the area to begin with. When people see someone getting a free tv they tend to join in.

I'd say that as long as America is mildly prosperous you'll never see anything like this on a massive scale. Look at most revolutions and you'll find that they usually occur when the government puts a heavy burden on people who are already in dire circumstances. The super rich are actually better off when society prospers because the more we make/spend the more they will make from us. There is no reason for them to enslave us or take everything from us when they are better off with us happily working our lives away for them.

dude don't you remember way back when we first bombed Baghdad and we got all of the sweet night vision footage

wasn't that shit cool?

and that was a calculated move... they could have done those bombing raids during the day too but they saved the fireworks for prime time and kept the show going on into the night

I don't think there are enough Koreans and racist cops in Raleigh (or most of the other cities in the US) for this to happen anywhere but LA.

"Estimates of the number of lives lost during the unrest vary between 50 and 60, with as many as 2,000 people injured. Estimates of the material damage done vary between about $800 million and $1 billion. Approximately 3,600 fires were set, destroying 1,100 buildings, with fire calls coming once every minute at some points. About 10,000 people were arrested. Stores owned by Korean and other Asian immigrants were widely targeted, although stores owned by whites and blacks were also targeted. Despite the race riot image the event retains, much of the looting and violence was done by young men, mostly black, and much of the looting was opportunistic theft of luxury goods. Criminals used the chaos to their own benefit, and street gangs settled scores with each other and fought the police."

Quote :
"Reginald Denny, a white truck driver stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Florence and South Normandie Avenues, was dragged from his vehicle and severely beaten by a mob of black local residents as news helicopters hovered above, recording every blow, including a concrete fragment connecting with Denny's temple and a cinder block thrown at his head as he lay unconscious in the street. The police never appeared, having been ordered to withdraw for their own safety, although several assailants were later arrested and one sent to prison. Instead, Denny was rescued, not by police officers, but by unarmed civilian black neighbors who, seeing the assault live on television, rushed to the scene. Denny would recover after brain surgery. Although several Asian and Latino motorists were brutally beaten by the same mob, due to the live coverage he remains the best-known victim of the riots."

Quote :
"At the same intersection, just minutes after Denny was rescued, another beating was captured on video tape. Fidel Lopez, a self-employed construction worker and Guatemalan immigrant, was ripped from his truck and robbed of nearly $2,000. A rioter smashed his forehead open with a car stereo as another rioter attempted to slice his ear off. After Lopez lost consciousness, the crowd spray painted his chest, torso and genitals black. Lopez survived the attack, after extensive surgery to reattach his partially severed ear and months of recovery."

As the only person on this board to have actually been IN the riots....I can assure you of a few things:

A) It was cool....because school was cancelled.

B) It was not cool, because there was a city wide curfew.

C) The roof of our house was a good spot to watch.

D) We had plans to loot the Gap, but we were all talk.

F) It showed just how fucking stupid the population of that part of L.A. is.

G) My dad kept his gun with him at all times.

That's not exactly 'seedy', but I do recall the riots/looters were making a bee-line for Bev Hills...didn't get too close though, I believe they got about as far as about Melrose near the Paramount Studios
