ok so my roomate has this puppy that barks all the fucking time and shits on the carpet all the time...WILL NOT shit/piss outsideroomate bought some pad that i think the dog pisses on but as far as shitting it just wont go outside...i got some good tips from drunktyper and i'm trying to implement them but just wondering what techniques/tips yall have for fixing this...i'm not living in a shit smelling apartment, and today when my roomate left the dog yelped and barked so much it woke me up...that shits not gonna last either...i'm trying my best to give the dog positive reinforcement, but i'll be honest: i really would love to just beat the shit out of this dog....i hear the yelping/barking in the crate thing will eventually go away but i seriously just walked outside for about 45 minutes and this piece of shit didnt piss/shit at all

crate train it.
1/31/2008 10:32:15 AM
oh i should have had added that part....it is in a crate...it always yelps and barks(woke me up this morning when it was barking from the crate)...it always shits in the same area and i think my roomate is just kinda lazy and lets it sit there...i've told my roomate numerous times its pissing me off and i dont want to live in an apartment with shit...i dont think its registering yet

well i meant today specifically...as far as i know it has not shit inside today...i bet it would if it were not in its crate

try a muzzle. our dog was crapping in her crate and on the carpet all the time for the last 5 months and we randomly decided to buy a cloth muzzle and she hasn't had an accident since

carter and finley were both trained in three days.we literally took them out every 30 min-1 hour during the course of the whole day (you're going to need beer for this....). you seriously do this for 2 1/2 - 3 days (make a weekend of it)reward the shit out of them(no pun intended aha) with like ham when they go outside.spank the shit out of them when they go inside.we (me and d7freestyler) trained the new puppy, lebron like this.and i've had 2 accidents since, like, saturday (and both of those i was gone waaaaaayyyyy tooo long. so i partially blame myself)took 2 days.and he got it my mom just did this with her pup.....like a charm.and another set of married friends did it with theirssame result
1/31/2008 10:40:24 AM
take the dog out and wait till it shits -----> feed it steak (or any other treat-type stuff)if dog pisses outside -----> feed it steak (or any other treat-type stuff)if the dog shits in the house -----> beat it's assrepeat until house trained.ahaha, see above...i think that puppies just don't know they can hold it when they have to go. so when they feel the urge, they just do it. reward a good deed, punish a bad. they'll get it.[Edited on January 31, 2008 at 10:42 AM. how old is the pup? for younger pups:-while training, use the SAME potty spot outside. and pick up the poop! -take the puppy out after it wakes up (every nap) and after every play session, at the minimum. -always crate when you leave and always take the pup out when you first let it back out of the crate (when you return). -when the pup potties appropriately outside, mark the action (say, good potty, or, whatever you want to use), treat the pup with a super valuable treat (chicken, cheese, hotdogs, whatever), and make a big deal about what a good pup it is. then take it to play or go for a short walk or do something fun (don't just drag it back inside, b/c it will associate pottying with having to go back in...and who wants to do that?).-if you catch the pup in the act while inside, say 'NO' and immediately take the pup outside to the designated potty spot. the pup may or may not finish, but if it does, reward accordingly.-my gosh don't hit the poor guy! a little self control, please...-and by all means do NOT shove its face in a mess that it already made! no, it won't realize what it did was wrong. yeah, it may cower, but its feeding off of your posturing, tone, and expressions...-always watch the puppy. they will all give off signals when they need to potty...some are obvious (circling, sniffing), some are subtle. for example, my pup simply looked at the door. i had to be quick enough to catch that glance so i knew to take her out. now, I've turned that glance into a "show me" and she will physically go to the door and point at it with her snout when I ask if she has to go out.I can't think of anything else at the moment
1/31/2008 11:11:08 AM
^ what she said is basically how I trained both of my dogs. Took a few days and some patience, but it wasn't hard at all. Also when they "assume the position" and start to go, sometimes if you shout "NO" it will startle them for long enough that you can grab them and take them outside real quick before they make a mess in the house.also, most crates have adjustable sides to allow it to grow into it. Make sure the crate isn't big enough for the puppy to shit on one side and comfortably sleep on the other. They will naturally resist pissing or shitting where they eat/sleep. If you have to, rig up some cardboard so they only have a small portion of the crate to sleep in. [Edited on January 31, 2008 at 11:19 AM. Reason : d]

ok i've somewhat read this thread....i just hit it some and it stopped...then i leave the room and bam it starts barking like a motherfucker again...its not even my dog and i'm considering buying a muzzle for it....i dont mind the dog other than the barking and shitting inside...i figured if it were scared of me it wouldnt bark anymore(cause it'd know whats coming to it)...i dont get how you can only positively enforce behavior...imo the dog wouldnt know when its doing something wrong then
1/31/2008 11:22:49 AM
can you get muzzles at foodlion/family dollar? i'm not going all the way to fucking pet smart for this shit...its driving me crazy
1/31/2008 11:28:00 AM
even with a muzzle it will still whineit just is lonelythat shit will stop after a while.
1/31/2008 11:33:05 AM
if it's crated and you are there, let it out.that way when your roomate leaves, the dog won't feel lonely because it's just you there. just keep an eye on him/her and take it out every hour or so. it'll stop whining after a while, it just has to adjust.
1/31/2008 11:37:09 AM
dont get a muzzle...thats cruel if all you are trying to do is make it stop barking! its doing what a puppy does! if it whines/barks and you give it attention then it will associate making noise with getting someone to give it attention, good OR bad. You have to ignore the noise, then give attention when the pup is silent. yes, hitting the dog will make it fear you...it won't listen out of respect, but because it knows you'll hit it. That makes for an unhappy and potentially destructive dog.part of the problem could be that its bored...interact with it more, play with stuffies or squeakies or balls, teach it obedience/tricks (depending on its age)...thats a good way to mentally drain a dog if it isn't old enough to go on long walks, runs or to the dog park.[Edited on January 31, 2008 at 11:40 AM. morgan was a whiny little fucker when she first came home, but we put her crate in the room with us and she was better after that - she slept through the night after 2-3 weeksit can help to put a blanket over the crate too.depends on the breed too, some dogs are naturally smarter and eager to please than others.
1/31/2008 11:43:20 AM
hmmm...foodlion and family dollar dont have muzzles...i'd rather hear a wimper than a loud ass bark...attn is part of the problem i think...i think its been babied too much and is now an attn whore...
1/31/2008 11:50:21 AM
toys work at diverting puppies attention for atleast a little while. (atleast it shuts up/calms down mine) get a little squeak toy. squeak it to show them that it makes noise and then leave it there for them to play with.i personally am not a fan of crate training. ideally you should take a weekend and completely dedicate it to training the puppy. litterally take it out every hour until it gets the hang of things. so i'm not the right person to ask about crating, but i would say leave it in there as little as possible.
1/31/2008 11:58:16 AM
Can you put the crate in a bathroom where the sound is muffled?
1/31/2008 12:01:31 PM
i am a big fan of crate training because, in theory, the pup should start to look to the crate as a place of refuge. however that will only happen if you show the pup that the crate is a "good thing". you can feed him in there, give him treats in there, and don't ever put him in there to punish him. Also, as someone else suggested, the crate needs to grow with the puppy. They need only enough room to stand up and turn around. Any more, and they'll be able to potty in one corner and sleep in another. THIS is also why you can't just lock a dog up in a crate. The crate is small, and it would be cruel to leave a dog to lose its mind all day without any interaction or stimulation. When the dog gets older, you may ever need to use the crate, although it can be available (an appropriate size for the adult dog) for the pup to sleep in. Its also good to have a crate trained dog for when they are kenneled or at the vet. Same concept of being in a confined area. ALso, when you travel or have company over (if you need to confine the dog). you STILL haven't told us how old the dog is. the time they can "hold it" is dependent (in a healthy animal) on their age. Its usually equal to the age, in months...so, for example, if the puppy is 2 months old, then it can only hold its potty for 2 hours. However you don't want to push this...take the pup out every hour. If you want to take the dog out when you are the only one home, but you are afraid of losing sight of it, put its 6ft lead on and tie it to you. That way you will always be able to keep your eye on the pup. Remember though, the pup is out, its your responsibility to make sure you're giving it the proper attention. If neither you nor your roommate care to work with the dog, then it should probably go to a home where it can have better training and more attention.

you don't nessicarily (i KNOW i f'ed that one up) have to crate train for the dog to think of a crate as a "refuge" if you willmy pit bull contstantly sleeps in hers and runs in there when she's scared or simply if i tell her to get in there (she listens amazingly well....)she prefers to sleep in it actuallyand also lebron has a small puppy bed that he is CONSTANTLY in and when he gets tire/bored/ scared.he runs to it.but i do understand your theoryand it's probably right.i just like doing things a little different(i just personally HATE crate training...but to each his own right )carter however.she's all over the place. hahahabut shes a DAMN GOOD dog so it doesn't bother me one bit.^the month thing is a little off i think....lebron is about 3 months and he holds it 6 eeeaaaasily (the other two were the same way)[Edited on January 31, 2008 at 12:19 PM. We pretty much did like Joie said...take the dog out constantly for a few days and just reward the hell out of it when it goes outside. I have two dogs and trained them both this way and it worked great. You really do though have to take him out every 30 mins. to an hour though. We also used a crate with both of them...if you can’t be with the dog and monitor it, put it in the crate...some people think it’s cruel, but it’s really to keep the dog safe also if you don’t have time to watch it at the moment. just make sure to still take it out every hour. My dog now loves his crate...at night he puts himself in it to go to sleep. He's only a few months old...but after we started taking him out every hour...it didn’t take long until he just started sitting by the door if he needed to go. Now i let him out every few hours or if he sits by the door and he hasn’t had an accident since we started this.As far as the barking...some of it could be seperation anxiety and some could be other things. As far as that, we just kinda let it be...it will eventually go away. My little one still barks some when he's in his crate, but is pretty quick to quiet down. What you have to do is if hes in his crate and hes barking, give him no attention...even yelling at him he thinks is attention. When he's quiet for 5 mis or so...reward him, let him out, play with him. Do this for a while, and move the 5 mins to 10...and so on...eventually he should get it. Even when its time for him to come out...if you go up to his crate and he's barking...turn your back until he quiets down and then let him out...he has to understand that barking will get him nothing...hope this helps[Edited on January 31, 2008 at 12:21 PM. I've had dogs my entire life and have rescued and fostered over 70 in the past few years. All but 3 were puppies under 3 months of age and I had ALL of them housetrained within a week.I did all of the below post and a few other things when it came to housebreaking1. Don't let the puppy out of your sight. Train it to follow you or someone around by giving it treats or a busy bone/toy (stuff a hollow bone with "king stuffin", cheese, wet dog food). Keep doors shut or put up child gates so its stays near you. My 3 dogs to this day follow me around the house.2. dogs and cats don't have a good short term memory, meaning unless you catch them in the ACTION of pissing/pooping then it doesn't understand. If you rub it's poor nose in it all your doing is making it feel horrible and ashamed but it has NO CLUE what it did wrong.

hahahamy mom's and mine actually we named finley first after the stadium (go wolfpack )and when i got my carter. i genuinely liked the name "carter" (especially for a girl doggie) and it was just sort of a coincidencemy mom's new puppy is named "Meredith Reynolds" to keep up with everything aha

I read an article about some chick who worked at a dog boarding place and at night some of the dogs would bark all night. She would place a cup of water in front of them when they started to bark/whine and the walk away. Five minutes later she would come back if they kept barking and throw it in their face. Here's the article: http://placervillevet.com/training_your_dog_to_stop_barking.htm[Edited on February 1, 2008 at 12:18 AM. If it keeps on using the puppy pads, take a used one outside and put it there before you take the pup out. They should see the poopy pad outside and get the message.
2/2/2008 3:10:00 AM
she just shit outside with me!!
2/2/2008 9:41:57 AM
why are YOU house training your ROOMMATE'S dog?
2/2/2008 10:18:23 AM
cause i'm not a douche
2/2/2008 10:49:45 AM
why does she shiver like she is cold when she is in her crate

lol, only if you try first....
2/2/2008 2:59:21 PM
i was just messing...dont try...if you did i'd probably get in trouble for telling you to do itso i took the dog to lake johnson today for the first time ever....she was ok...kinda wanted to playfight too much with other dogs...barked a few times as well.....near the end i stepped on her foot cause she got too close and it made her bleed some she wouldnt put the foot down for like a minute but i think shes ok now
2/2/2008 3:02:43 PM
dnl, dont worry.maybe if/when you graduate, you should open up a dog walking school
2/2/2008 3:10:08 PM
Dog shiver when scared. Now that she's not crapping in the crate, try covering it with a blanket (except the front so you can open it) and put a few old towels in there for her to lay down on. If you cover the crate it'll make her feel safer in it, probably cut down on barking too.
2/2/2008 3:17:08 PM
dog never crapped in the crate...dog has a bed thing inside the crate with like 2 toys....tried the blanket thing but she pulled some of it in and she chewed on it
2/2/2008 3:20:36 PM
lol, my dog did that too.I put some cardboard boxes around the sides and on the top, and then a blanket on top of them.
