I was thinking something along the lines of post modernism. I'm 95% sure this is what i'm going to do as soon as i finish narrowing down exactly what i want to argue.

Serious replies appreciated.
Nonserious replies welcome also.

I probably won't listen to any of your advice anywayz.

alternate fuels is easy. all you do is talk about the positives and negatives of all the different options and say that not a single one will do and we'll have to use many diverse sources.

Its not post modern, but you can take the various instruments used in the application of the death penalty in the US and their arguments, which are basically made for you...you just have to pick a side

thats not really the point of the project though. Its basically preparation for Upper level courses or graduate level thinking, on a really easy level. Doing some sort of research that hasn't been done (overdone?). I'm not supposed to spit out facts, its just an argumentative research paper.

Postmodernism is much too expansive a topic to write a paper on

I attempted to when I was a freshman and I went a little crazy... I don't think you want to do this to yourself - unless you're kind of already a philosophy and critical theory nerd

if you narrow the scope of your studies you can do a postmodern reading of something... that way you can get exposed to some of the theory and place it in a context

The term 'postmodern' has been applied to much of contemporary writing, particularly with reference to the use of experimental forms. The fundamental philosophical assumptions of modernism, its tendency toward historical discontinuity, alienation, asocial individualism, solipsism and existentialism continue to permeate contemporary writing. But the tendencies of the modernists to construct intricate forms, to interweave symbols elaborately, to create works of art that, however much they oppose some established present order, nevertheless create within themselves an ordered universe, have given way since the 1960's to a denial in any order, to the presentation of highly fragmented universes in the world of art, and to critical theories that are forms of phenomenology. Myths have been deconstructed, traditional forms have given way to denial of those forms, and the traditional protagonist has become not the her, but the antihero. The postmodern period in literature dates from 1965 forward.

Neither of those are postmodern.

Blood Meridian is more of a Bildungsroman than anything else, really.

1. In what ways can a literary work both reinforce and subvert the dominant ideology of the period in which it was written? Select two texts, one pre-Enlightenment and one from a later period, through which to illustrate your response.

2. From the earliest poets until today's fiction writers, authors have inserted themselves inside their texts. Discuss two works from two different literary periods which demonstrate this kind of self-reflexivity. What conclusions do you draw from the comparison?
