Anyone have any thoughts or advice on this class? Should it seem as hard as it does? Is the HW harder than the tests?

it's the weed out, it's shittons of workadvice: don't get weeded outthings certainly will get much harder, but rarely as much work in a single classand a junior in a first semester sophomore year class? what happened?[Edited on January 28, 2008 at 10:41 PM. Reason : ]
1/28/2008 10:40:28 PM
withdrew a semester and changed majors twice
1/28/2008 10:45:24 PM
also 200 is like a poorly-taught rush job on things you will be studying much more in depth later
1/28/2008 10:46:50 PM
It's just very annoying that the homeworks are completely different than anything in the book or in the notes. What the hell are we supposed to fall back on when we are lost?
1/28/2008 10:47:35 PM
I was totally lost in that class when I was doing the home works....Remember to use KCL and KVL, I never did and got burned tons of times....
1/28/2008 11:21:28 PM
Get out now while you still can...
1/31/2008 1:58:39 PM
hard...no busy work.....yesthis class is teaches the most basic principles of EE.
1/31/2008 3:44:45 PM
^ and we mean ALL of EE
1/31/2008 4:47:44 PM
It is well worth your time to go to office hours, especially if you're already feeling like the class is overwhelming. Later in the course I even sat in on the other section's lecture a few times for a double take of the harder stuff. I'm assuming Escuti & Ozturk are still teaching 200? Both of them are amazing teachers. Put in the effort that the class demands and you'll do just fine. Forming study groups is also a saving grace in ECE. If you can't hack it in 200- get out. Seriously. It isn't going to get easier.
1/31/2008 8:21:32 PM
I just took this class last semester. Yes it sucks, but I found the HW's were much harder than the tests. If you don't have a study group then it is almost required to go to office hours because you don't want to get behind.

I would say ECE 220 is the major weed out class. 200 is hard mainly because the material is completely new for most people. It is a great class to determine whether you will like ECE or not though.Study groups are definately the way to go. Especially in the early ECE classes.[Edited on February 1, 2008 at 9:08 AM. Reason : study groups]
2/1/2008 9:07:51 AM
^I'm in ECE220 now and yes it sucks too. I like math, but Dr. Ozturk flies through the material and assumes that we remember stuff that we did 4 years ago in high school. Before anyone says anything, I know I am going to have to put in some effort, so don't tell me to switch majors or something.
2/1/2008 9:43:37 AM
heh, if you don't like 220, you're gonna hate the next two years
2/1/2008 2:04:21 PM
2/1/2008 3:51:59 PM
I remember back when I thought 220 was hard
2/1/2008 4:25:06 PM
^^I knew someone was going to come in here and make a dumb remark. I KNOW I have to study up on the stuff, doesn't mean I can't bitch about it. It was weird that they expected us to remember a lot about matrices, but then yesterday she taught complex numbers from the beginning like we'd never seen them before.[Edited on February 1, 2008 at 10:56 PM. 2/1/2008 10:55:49 PM
I remember back when I thought 301 was hard
2/2/2008 2:48:21 PM
How is that a dumb remark? I simply stated what is expected of you as an engineering student. You are expected to know high school math, so Ozturk's assumption is fair. Plus, you should have taken 2 or 3 semesters of calculus by the time you take 220, so you should have re-examined all the old high school stuff anyways. Bitching is fine, but don't whine about how a teacher/class sucks when you're not going to put forth the effort to revisit concepts you learned a few years ago. This is college, they aren't going to spoon-feed you the material. To answer the OPs question, I thought 200 was an excellent class. There was a lot of work involved, and some of it was busy work (I guess to try to weed some people out). However, the fact that they try to expose students to the broad field of electrical engineering was a fantastic idea. Tracing back my decisions to pursue power as my career, I think it all began with the small chapter on power that Mehmet had written just before the class started.]

i took ece200 the first semester it was ever offered. it was a good class concept, but it was very poorly organized and a lot of bugs in the labs weren't worked out yet. i don't think i got as much out of it as i would have after it had a couple semesters to "mature".that being said, if you're having a hard time with the class, good luck on the rest of your engineering career.
2/2/2008 4:37:12 PM
^^^did you have Alexander? 301 with him wasn't very hard at all

ECE 200 is the most worthless, crappiest class i had in eCE
2/3/2008 1:45:45 PM
2/4/2008 6:23:15 PM
I got weeded out by ECE200 I was on track to actually get a low A in the class before I dropped it, but the labs/homeworks were just utterly frustrating. None of my TAs could speak english, and whenever I asked Escuti a question his answer began with "Well I think its obvious...."If there is one thing I've learned in my 4 years at state, its that a professor that uses the phrase "I think its obvious" is most likely worthless as a teacher.
2/7/2008 12:01:35 AM
2/7/2008 10:10:32 AM
^^i really liked escuti (had him for ece492K) and thought he was a very good prof. i never heard him answer any questions condescendingly or brush them off. weird that you ran into that problem with him.
2/7/2008 12:04:45 PM
ECE is hard, but if you complete it your degree will return dividends when applying for jobs! Luckily every employer knows that, and it will benefit you!Just remember C's get degrees!

ECE220 is a math class, its very basic.ECE200 is a welcome to college course.Make a distinction between good grades, and good knowledge. Really a hard thing to realize in the moment. I made good grades but wish I had actually cared. If youre getting C's in ECE I suggest a change. You can either do algebra or you cant. [Edited on February 7, 2008 at 7:59 PM. Reason : .]
2/7/2008 7:58:35 PM
^i disagree. i got C's and B's and a few A's in my ECE classes and never really liked them or put any time or effort into them. i did well in my non-major classes and ended up with a decent GPA and got a job in a EE related field which i enjoy.
2/9/2008 10:25:30 AM
I thought Escuti was an excellent professor. Is he still doing the golden solder competition in 200?
2/9/2008 1:29:49 PM
^yes. I thought Escuti was a good teacher as well.

^^Oh yeah I forgot. One grammatical mistake is usually the test for intelligence.

for the record, my C's (and most of them C+'s) were outnumbered by B's and A's. all grades were acheived by doing the bare minimum to get by and lack of desire to learn more about the subject matter. as i said, i didn't enjoy my ECE classes...so i spent as little time on them as possible. i don't understand what your second point is. should i have done better in my ECE classes? yes. did i still get the desired end result out of my education? again, yes. the point of my posting was to encourage those who do not have the ECE prowess of a Quinn or another top notch ECE student but still desire to stick out the rest of the cirriculum and go from there.
2/11/2008 9:32:59 AM
I guess it's hard for me to understand how someone could hate 4 years of ECE and half ass their way to graduation just to be an electrical engineer. How do you get a job where you dont use your coursework on a semi daily basis?[Edited on February 11, 2008 at 6:36 PM. Reason : .]
2/11/2008 6:36:27 PM
an engineering degree is one of the most valuable undergrad degrees you can have, regardless of what your job is
2/11/2008 6:49:00 PM
I was lucky, I think i was in the first group under the new curriculum, put very little effort in to the class and came out with A-
2/11/2008 7:51:31 PM
ECE classes were only for 3 years...and I didn't hate them, I was neutral on them and didn't care to spend extra effort to do well in them. I am a control systems/instrumentation engineer and I don't really think anything I studied in the ECE cirrciulum is actually used in my daily work.
2/12/2008 1:20:23 PM
ece 200 isn't hard enough to be called a weed out class.
