I just read a review of the 123d... that would be some hottness... 0-60 in 7, 54 mpg! and you just know that the midrange is probably comparable to the 135.....

^^won't never happen now that the tree-huggers got their way and diesel is now super-refined to achieve the ULSD stamp.

Well, the sulfur in diesel needed to be refined out, if you've seen any of the numbers. I'm by no means a tree hugger, but I do understand the need for reduced particulates (which is ultimately a big reason why sulfur is being attacked). Another high reason for diesel prices is international competition.

and, btw, the BMW diesels will be ridiculously expensive...

+ urea ... =

that's why honda has an engine that doesn't use urea.

VW's new clean diesels.....i don't think they use urea.

the larger engine will (touraeg), but i don't think the clean diesel does (jetta). i think it uses a NOx burn off chamber.

BMW X5 Twin Turbo Hybrid Concept Revealed

Hybrid Diesel engine!

Very impressive technology and stats:

Quote :
"To be revealed at the Geneva show, BMW’s Vision EfficientDynamics Concept is jam packed with innovative new state-of-the-art technology aimed at reducing emissions and improving efficiency. Based on the bulky X5, the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept is one of the first Diesel Hybrid applications in a passenger car. Only a few other manufacturers like Mercedes, PSA and Ford have shown Diesel Hybrid systems in the past. The vehicle employs a highly developed 2.0L turbo diesel four cylinder engine that uses variable twin turbo system and 3rd generation common rail technology to produce an impressive 204hp and 400Nm of torque. This powerplant is assisted by a mild Hybrid concept that uses a compact generator to provide up to 20hp more power and a whopping 210Nm of torque. All the torque is fed through a new 8 speed automatic transmission developed in conjunction with ZF. The greater spread of gear ratios should allow the engine to run at its more optimal speed/load point for a given road speed. BMW quote 43.5mpg or 172g/km CO2 of on the combined cycle, which is hugely impressive for a vehicle the size of the X5. The car is also equipped with BMW’s regenerative braking system and photovoltaic solar panels mounted to the roof. "

From 2.0 litre TT 4-cyl diesel engine:

204 hp
295 lb-ft

From electric engine, additional:

20 hp
155 lb-ft

And best of all, 43.5 mpg!

Technology in the wheels as well:

Quote :
"This includes aerodynamically-efficient 19-inch light alloy wheels with reduced ventilation. The design of the spokes reduces wind resistance to the extent that, at 100mph, the car has to produce one horsepower less than a conventionally-wheeled car."

An old Norwegian man used to live down the road from us who was an engineer with the Merchant Marines in the 20's and 30's. He used to say that if you were hard up for some diesel fuel you could put a quart of 30w motor oil in 5 gallons of kerosene. Has anyone else heard this. Obviously, you couldn't use it in high tech engines, but it seems like an interesting concept.

sure could

every warning light would come on now if you even got close to a new diesel with anything other than pure $4 a gallon diesel.

43 MPG in an X5 would be the shit. I'll have to look into that when it comes out.
