Well if it looks horribly fucked up you should take him to the doctor.

take him to the doc, at least he'll get some pain killers

should get it xrayed just in case

(hope it is fractured, it will heal faster than a really bad sprain)

I sprained my ankle while playing soccer in high school and I thought I was gonna die of pain. I can't imagine a broken ankle.

bad sprain or a tear is worse than a fracture

[Edited on January 21, 2008 at 3:36 PM. Reason : pain wise as well as healing]

if you like, i can prepare an herbal healing powder that should leave your roommate with full range of motion on the morrow

if not, its probably a tear or sprain

either way, take him to the doctor.

I broke my ankle a year ago

It wasn't all that painful until it started swelling badly about 2 hours later and I still hadn't had any pain killers.

I fell down a flight of stairs when I was a kid and they thought I broke both my ankles they were swollen so bad. Turns out they were just sprained. Hopefully his is just a sprain if he doesn't have insurance.

dont worry...the trick is to purse your lips like you're putting on chapstick, but make sure they're closed so the tounges dont touch

My worst recurring injury from age 18-24 was from a turned ankle that didn't break. It flexed the bone enough that a chip popped off of it and it tore the tendons in my ankle all to hell. It made for some seriously painful re-injuries which usually involved major swelling and the bottom of my foot turning black (from blood running down from my ankle area to my foot.)

An air cast actually made a huge difference both in treating injuries and preventing them. You might want to try to get one after the swelling goes down if you can find one that somebody isn't using anymore.

i'm guessing your roommate isn't a student? or else he could go to the health center and he'd be on his parents insurance. that is a tough break. i guess try to stay away from the ER if possible cause that seems like the most expensive thing you could do.

in that case, i'd just RICE is, and if it isnt better in a couple days get him over to the free clinic

i preface this by stating that i am not a physician and that the best option in this situation is to get your friend to the hospital

but

if he still has full range of motion, and, after a couple of hours or so, it's not supermassively swelling, it's probably not fractured. ice to control localized edema and tylenol for pain/edema.

i would still go get a film on it though, you never can be sure about ankles... plus if you fuck them up and then fuck them up while they're healing, you've usually fucked your ankle up for life.

Break his other ankle and see if it is comparable to the first. If the control (Broken Ankle) looks worse then the questioned one then its probably not broken.

Another good reason to always have insurance. The only "good advice" is going to a doctor.
