must not watch a lot of football
1/20/2008 7:31:52 PM
I bring this up a lot to football fansThey rarely seem to have sensible explanations[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 7:35 PM. Reason : .]
1/20/2008 7:34:56 PM
maybe pace was a poor choice of wordsit's just all these goddamn commercials
1/20/2008 7:37:46 PM
if a qb could back out of the snap/count because he had to adjust his crotch and not get a delay of game penalty, then it'd be as slow and boring as baseball.
1/20/2008 7:38:47 PM
in soccer, there are only commercials at halftime. not every 3 seconds
1/20/2008 7:39:37 PM
but in soccer they will stand around for 30 seconds just looking at everyone. but it's still better than baseball.
1/20/2008 7:41:03 PM
but you get to watch people knock the fuck out of each other in football.[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 7:59 PM. Reason : ]
1/20/2008 7:59:02 PM
I think the best reason is"I feel less bored watching football"I like both btw, but prefer football
1/20/2008 8:02:14 PM
a pitch is not eqiuvalent to a football play. each football play is equivalent to contact in baseball. Most of the time it takes 3 or pitches before you get contact. the constant ball strik ball strike foul foul foul foul foul foul foul ball foul foul foul foul foul flyout is why baseball is so boring. every snap of football 22 guys are involved. theres probably an average of 3.4 guys involved in each baseball play. and a maximum of what 6? 7 8 or 9 on even the craziest plays.baseball is the only sport where there is always somebody on the field doing absolutely nothing. A guy can go a whole game standing in one spot, and not break a sweat[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 8:04 PM. Reason : boring to play and watch]
1/20/2008 8:02:31 PM
1/20/2008 8:04:54 PM
^im pretty sure i explained it. please read.(how many people are involved in each)
1/20/2008 8:09:22 PM
Football: the only sport where six minutes of action takes four hours to happen.
1/20/2008 8:14:07 PM
I don't complain about the pace, just the amount of action
1/20/2008 8:16:47 PM
baseball: the only sport without a clock or score to win[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 8:27 PM. Reason : tennis you are trying to get a certain points. baseball you can have 300 and the game going]
1/20/2008 8:21:17 PM
nope
1/20/2008 8:22:22 PM
^^^^ To be fair, it's sixty minutes of action that generally takes three hours.Baseball is just plain boring. The games last even longer (or at least it seems like it) and there's technically no limit on how long the game can go on. There also seems to be a lot less strategy involved in baseball. Hit the ball, hope it's not caught immediately, and run for the next base before the ball gets there. Repeat for nine innings. Boring.Football, on the other hand... every play is well thought out, like a move in chess. There's an element of deception (disguising run/pass plays), and additional strategy involved in clock/timeout management.Even though there are numerous breaks in the action, football seems to flow a lot better and be a much faster paced game.[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 8:23 PM. Reason : ...]
1/20/2008 8:23:24 PM
i guess i should have gotten this out of the way in the first post -- i apologize for not doing soanyone who thinks there is little to no strategy involved in baseball is mongoloid who knows nothing about the game and whose opinion is thereby invalid in this discussion
1/20/2008 8:26:16 PM
ha. football definitely isn't 60min of action considering your average play takes very little time and the rest is just the clock running.
1/20/2008 8:27:42 PM
1/20/2008 8:28:04 PM
baseball is awesome.
1/20/2008 8:31:23 PM
^^ Oh I forgot, you can bunt and walk too.
1/20/2008 8:32:57 PM
People who bitch about the pace of any sporting event must not drink much beer.
1/20/2008 8:33:46 PM
so would this be a fair description of football:wear tights, throw the ball or hand it off, run and hope you dont get tackled. repeat for 3-4 hours[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 8:37 PM. Reason : .]
1/20/2008 8:34:29 PM
there is an incredible amount of strategy involved in baseball.
1/20/2008 8:34:51 PM
Football is more popular because of three things:- Better for gambling.- Better for fantasy sports (easier stats to follow).- The NFL's steroid problem is expected so no one cares.** Really anyone who has no fucking clue how a sport operates takes a very simplistic view of it. That goes for baseball, football, soccer, golf or anything else.[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 8:48 PM. Reason : clarify]
1/20/2008 8:46:30 PM
if that was the case basketball would be the most popular sport by far
1/20/2008 8:49:00 PM
basketball is good except even the announcers don't give a shit what's going on during an NBA game.
1/20/2008 8:49:58 PM
1/20/2008 8:51:23 PM
I'd much rather watch college football/basketball over the NFL or MLB
1/20/2008 8:53:52 PM
nah, not in the case of basketball. the nba is a real bastardization of basketball for the sake of high scoring.
1/20/2008 8:54:29 PM
I think it all ends up being games are more entertaining to watch when you get the fans that are at the game into it. You can have an active game in any sport but if you have no crowd noise it takes away some of the excitement going on. NBA games hardly ever have much crowd noise, you just hear the PA music and the commentators just talking out their ass about whatever crosses their mind.
1/20/2008 8:55:20 PM
Ok, that's fair. I like college b/c of the atmosphere too... I just can't stand when people use the "style of play" thing... College basketball is really a shitty brand of basketball compared to the athleticism night in and night out in the Association...
1/20/2008 8:56:29 PM
yeah but you're talking about a league that made the zone defense illegal. it's all about scoring in the Association. they may be athletic, but so are the globetrotters.
1/20/2008 8:57:59 PM
i prefer college ball to the NBA, only because i've never had an NBA team that i cared much aboutif i had to rank my viewing preferences:1. MLB2. college basketball3. NFL4. college basketball5. major golf6. international soccer7. NHL8. club soccer9. NBA
1/20/2008 8:58:59 PM
1. NFL2. College basketball3. College football4. uhhhh, there aren't any other sports worth watching on a regular basis.
1/20/2008 9:32:11 PM
There is a "style" to the NBA, with the shorter shot clock and no zone defenseThere is more talent in the NBA, and less effort. Fans don't storm the court for NBA gamesThe NBA has no selection sundayNothing like what happened in '83 happens in the NBAThere are tons of new faces around the country every year in NCAA basketballA lot more development takes place in college Sorry to hijack
1/20/2008 9:32:39 PM
FYI, you can play zone in the NBA now...Mine is:1) MLB2) NBA3) NFL4) CFB5) CBB....But I'll watch anything if it's on and I have time.. but I can watch MLB games with anyone playing every single night...[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 9:36 PM. Reason : x]
1/20/2008 9:34:21 PM
my list should read2. college basketball4. college football
1/20/2008 9:35:18 PM
^^ i assume you were talking to ^^^, but for the record i knew this, just pointing out their willingness to change the game significantly for the sake of scoring.
1/20/2008 9:36:36 PM
Yeah, those great zones that don't require you to be in the paint for 3 seconds..mine is1.NFL2. NCAA bball3. tennis4. international soccer/premiership soccer/MLB5. NBA[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 9:43 PM. Reason : ul]
1/20/2008 9:38:31 PM
haha yes, a defensive 3 seconds is another joke the nba tried to pull. i thought that was a thing of the past as well, though.[Edited on January 20, 2008 at 9:45 PM. Reason : i guess that shit's still around.]
1/20/2008 9:43:46 PM
bastardized version of basketball for the sake of scoring? That doesn't even make sense. It's not even close to accurate.
1/21/2008 12:52:40 AM
the nba doesn't change its rules to increase scoring?really?
1/21/2008 12:57:19 AM
Baseball on TV bores me.Football on TV does not.
1/21/2008 12:57:26 AM
1/21/2008 1:01:45 AM
There are rules in place that increase scoring (i.e. the 24 second shot clock) but they recently allowed zone defense. So scoring the basketball and a faster game obviously isn't the goal of the NBA.To call the NBA a bastardized version of basketball when it is clearly the highest level of play on the planet (by a longshot) just doesn't make sense to me.
1/21/2008 1:13:24 AM
1/21/2008 1:25:36 AM
1/21/2008 1:27:18 AM
if a league is "clearly the highest level of play on the planet (by a longshot)", they wouldn't lose, i don't care if it's exhibition.
1/21/2008 1:31:48 AM
Like Michigan State did this year to a D-II team?
