just the evolution of man or evolution in general?

evolution is a deeper question than most people think...

if you accept the fact that there was a reality before the existence of man, then yes there must have been evolution

but if you get into metaphysical questions involving the nature of reality and man's place in the universe, then it becomes merely one explanation of many

it's not a certain proposition...if you accept the premise that the world cannot exist without consciousness, then there was no reality before the creation of life

and then you just have to ask what degree of consciousness is required: amoebas? plants? mammals? humans?

Evolution in general, hahaha.

The other night she refused to watch some show I was watching on Darwin then just now my little sister asked me what a homo-erectus was (lol) I told her it was one of the earlier forms homo-sapiens before they evolved. My gf was like "THAT'S IF YOU BELIEVE IN EVOLUTION!!!!"

lol yeah she's a Mormon.

so what--God just imbues bacteria with drug-resistance every once in a while for the hell of it?

it kinda makes sense, when you think about it...have you ever seen anything existing outside of your or anyone else's consciousness? by definition, no. in our experience (which is all we have to rely on), consciousness and the physical world are intextricably tied.

and there is also plenty of quantum mechanical evidence which implies that the world does not "exist" until someone looks at it

^ I sorta think the bacteria themselves are individually conscious...that's a good point though

i see no compelling reason why it would be necessary for a world to be conceived in order to exist, and even if it were, who's to say it wasn't God that conceived it before he conceived humans and drug-resistant bacteria

Yeah Jackleg I am. And I'd like to point you towards that Robin Williams stand up special. I can't remember the exact quote but he was talking about how uptight Americans are compared to the rest of the world ... "We are so uptight that the English kicked us out in the 1600s because we were too uptight"

This is fucking retarded. If it doesn't exist until we can see it then how do you find it. We didn't see atoms until people developed the microscope does that mean they didn't exist until then?

So animals don't exist until people see them. Well how do we see them if they don't exist because we haven't seen them yet?

you saw the stuff that was MADE of atoms, therefore you saw the atoms

even if this held up logically, animals are conscious beings and therefore have an independent existence

No the animals wouldn't exist in our world because we haven't seen them yet but because we can't see them we can't prove they exist.

very true..."perceive" or "sense" would better...it's not limited to sight

^^^
the argument is that there's only one world, but it exists only through consciousness...the animals themselves exist in their own right, and so do we...

But we can't know they exist because we can't sense them to prove they exist because they don't exist until we sense them.

the sad thing is that I've very rarely trolled, in Technician or otherwise

wait, that's a lie

^^
we don't have to know it exists...it exists in its own right, by virtue of being a conscious entity

the question would work a lot better if you were dealing with a nonliving entity...a rock, say

so I might reword your question as, "If I dig in the ground and find a rock, how does that rock exist? Because it didn't exist till I found it, so where did it come from?"

and I'm claiming that the rock was created upon your finding it

I agree with Jeffrey

even if the world does exist beyond the scope of one's perception and contemplation it doesn't matter because we are limited by our own perspective

The rock was there before you dug. If it only exist upon discovery then you could never discover it because you would never sense it until you found it.

You can't create it upon your finding that doesn't make any sense. It would have to exist before you found it.

If you created it then you wouldn't have to sense it to know it exist. You can't create it upon your finding it.
