formerly referred to as multiple personality disorder, DID usually occurs in response to some form of severe trauma or extremely stressful life event. DID has several symptoms such as blacking out, and not remembering certain events (when the "other personality takes over"), they may engage in erratic and impulsive behavior, and will at time seem to be a completely different person... DID, if severe, can require therapy in combination with medication for treatment. it's not the same as schizophrenia- which involves external delusions involving events, people, and voices. DID patients however, have internal shifts of identity, and will often change their personal appearance and may be hearing voices from "within." If you are concerned for your friend then you may suggest to them to go to student counseling or even a family doctor to discuss the symptoms, and obtain a proper referral.
