ha ha i intercepted my bigass shipments of steak from the UPS guy so they didnt sit out. i dont know if it would have mattered either way cause im not a scientist.

so anyway i packed the freezer with the food. and i want to play with the dry ice later (no bombs)

first, i cant play now i gotta go where should i store it to last longer? each bag came at the bottom of a big cooler in a bag with hole punch size holes every few inches. decent sized chunks. i was gonna repack it into freezer bags and just put it in the freezer, will that work?

second, what is some cool stuff i can do with it. i cant remember 5th grade.

Put water and dry ice into a cup. Cool enough already. Get a paper towel wet and put soap on it. Cover the cup with the paper towel and press the edges to form a seal. Then slowy pull the towel off to form a film on top of the cup. The reaction of the dry ice and water will cause the film to expand into a bubble, and eventually pop, just like here.

The video is played twice as fast from when the bubble starts until it is popped - it took over to minutes to pop itself. The rupture is played in slow motion. Enjoy!

oh man i have like 500x the amount in that video

how do you shatter stuff? dry ice and water?

and i just threw the bags into a bunch of plastic harris teeter bags and stuffed them in the freezer. will that hold it? i dont know if its still melting in there or not, because im stupid ok

you know what, i think i was probably thinking of liquid nitrogen too. but i guess i can still do something fun right. especially since its supposed to be shitty icy up here tomorrow

Just be careful not to hold it that long, you'll get a nasty burn.

Fill a coke bottle half full of water, place dry ice inside, and screw cap on firmly.

We got some cheap dry ice from Kmart back in the day and had fun with it in Sullivan dorm.

Those things are loud as fuck. We woke up all of Sullivan and Lee one night I think.

^^ My friend who lives about 1/8-1/4 a mile down the road from where I used to live did this once when I was in my house. I heard a very large explosion then he bugged me on AIM with "OH MAN THAT WAS SO AWESOME!!!"

It was loud enough that it sounded like a car accident or something (if you've ever been outside and heard one at a distance). Some serious BOOM can go on if you do that.

ok so the basic principle is that i can really only use it with water and make the co2 release a lot faster than it would just sitting there?

seems like the main fun thing is to blow up coke bottles.

oh well, the freezer will only go to -6 so im leaving it alone and not fucking up my food just so i can blow up a coke bottle

but i will check this thread later!!!1

Press a warm spoon firmly against a chunk of dry ice. The spoon will scream loudly as the heat of the spoon causes the dry ice to instantly turn to gas where the two make contact. The pressure of this gas pushes the spoon away from the dry ice, and without contact, the dry ice stops sublimating. The spoon falls back into contact again, and the cycle repeats. This all happens so quickly that the spoon vibrates, causing the singing sound you hear

We also made a silly contraption using a 2 liter where you screw the cap on and opened a small valve and the gas passes through some nozzles and made the bottle spin very fast.

Ours was loud. Like shake the building, wake up everyone within a few hundred yards loud. We experimented with different bottle sizes and water percentages to get the loudest effect.

We also dropped it down the Sullivan fire chute once and into the metal dumpster...which produced a nice effect.

we always used it to cool our kegs at keg parties ... that way the keg is suspended in freezing cold yet "boiling" water with a dense fog around it. and drifting onto the floor.

aha I saw this on Mr. Wizard when I was like 8. I've always wanted to try it. On that same segment he put a whole bunch of it in water and it made his floor look like he was walking on a cloud. <3 that show. RIP Don Herbert

dry ice is only ~ -80C, won't shatter much at that temp...

yep

pussy, real men can hold LN2

Quote :

-40 F = - 40 C (odd congruence point), you can try but since it de-ices automatically it will get up to 33 then back down periodically.

dry ice sublimes at a huge expansion rate, 1 kg solid = 808 cubic meters of CO2....

so, better leave a window open... it can and will kill you if you have enough of it... (while you sleep)

Quote :
"Dry ice can also be used for making ice cream.[7]

Dry ice is also used as a source of carbon dioxide. It can be used to carbonate water and other liquids such as beer.[citation needed] It can be used as bait to trap mosquitoes and other insects[8]

When dry ice is placed in water sublimation is accelerated, and low-sinking dense clouds of fog are created. This is used in fog machines at theaters, discoteques and nightclubs for dramatic effects."

as much as never being able to reach absolute zero?

or bose-einstein condensates that spontaneously flow out of their containers?

the never-reaching-absolute-zero thing has always made sense
based on thermo and such

but it is a rare thing indeed that those two scales have an equivalent temperature at the same value

no not really

they are two linear functions with different slopes

they have to intersect somewhere

be careful, I almost blew my face off with a dry ice bomb back in the day

my friend had to get stitches in his hand when one blew up faster than he could throw it

(it exploded as it left his hand)
