Well, I may have been exposed to BSE (mad cow disease)--I spent almost three years in Europe during the '80s. I used to regularly donate blood but now I am banned--permanently--because of the potential BSE exposure. Moo.
1/16/2008 12:01:19 AM
Hey it's cool man, I got diabetes and they told me they didn't want my blood either. It's kind of like being a leper. This is most unfortunate for the chowder monkeys that are going to get this disease. Gay people just don't seem to be getting a break in the biblical plague category of diseases.
1/16/2008 12:10:39 AM
its way too soon for a new aids.i haven't even gotten the old one yet.
1/16/2008 12:27:43 AM
MRSA is a staph infection. If you shower regularly (especially after working out) wash your hands, wear clean clothes and avoid physical contact (ie gay buttsex) with people who have nasty shit growing on them, you stand a good chance of avoiding it. As a wrestler I'm an expert on avoiding this kind of stuff.Basically don't be a dirty basterd and you got nothing to worry about.

its actually very contagiousif you test positive for MRSA in a hospital, or if you come in from an outside hospital you go on contact isolation. meaning you must wear a gown and gloves when you enter a patients room. oh fuck itjust read this http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_healthcareFS.html

something ado about the "new gay man's plague"
1/16/2008 2:26:33 AM
^^You shouldn't get you'r panties in such a twist. I didn't say I knew more than you or anyone else. Just saying that as a person whose wrestled since they could walk, I've never gotten staph, ringworm, or any other skin infection in a sport where it is rampant. That said, those were the techniques that worked for me and should work for most people in their day to day life. Guess what, I have medical training too, but I didn't have to mention it or use it to talk down to people. Funny thing though, the link you posted says, in a nutshell, to maintain propper hygeine and avoiding contact with MRSA to keep from getting it.. You know, kind of exactly what I said.[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 2:28 AM. Reason : ^^]

it would be funny to see your nasal swab come back positive despite your excellent hygeine.everyone admitted to our icu is swabbed. we expect mrsa to be in people from other facilities esp nursing homes. but more and more people are turning out to be positive for no good reason other than mrsa is a common community infection now.just because youve never had an active mrsal infection doesnt mean you arent colonized.that itchy nose you absentmindedly scratched just minutes after touching that shopping cart? Yeah, thats how it happens. only your young healthy immune system keeps you from getting active mrsa pneumonia because your body recognizes the staph bacteria.the reason im pretty sure im colonized, i worked in the large animal hospital with mrsa positive horses. how much of that mrsa positive dust did i inhale?OR how many times have i been sprayed in the face by microscopic mrsa infected secretions from disconnected ventilators, that spray that shit all over the room.perfect hygeine is gonna prevent that fuck no.i am sure you are vigilent about your hygeine while you wrestle, but its that one time when you werent so vigilent out and about doing your daily activities. Or what about that microsopic skin tear you had while being face planted on that dirty wet mat.dont be so arrogant to assume you dont have mrsa.in medicine, that shit will kill you quick-- i cant have blah blah blah because i protect myself by taking xyz actions..........famous last words of a dead man
1/16/2008 7:57:16 AM
is it me, or is this old news.couple months ago it hit bit around here. its still big, but no big dealhalf of UNC hospital has MRSA.
1/16/2008 8:59:59 AM
^^^ LOL
1/16/2008 11:18:18 AM
^^^As a matter of fact I have been nasal swabbed for it and was negative. So who is making assumptions here? A guy who I wrestled with had a real nasty case of staph a few months ago and there was "MRSA scare." I personally wasn't too worried, and was right not to be. As far as dirty mats go, every place I've ever wrestled at (and that numbers in the hundreds) thuroughly mopped the mats with bleach both before and after practices/matches. This is standard practice. That combined with the fact that most wrestlers cover up with long sleeves, sweats, and regular skin and fingernail checks by coaches and trainers greatly reduce risks. Through in a shower immediatly after walking off the mat and puting on clean clothes and the desired results are generally (But not always) reached. Ironically, the scaremongering you just heaped was exactly what I was trying to head off. You act as if you've told me anything I don't already know. You can get it off of shopping carts, and atm machines, door knobs and toilets in public bathrooms, ect.? Really? No fucking shit. Anything Is possible. I would question the likelihood seeing as MRSA has been around a good while and there is no massive outbreak in the general population. I seem to remember my parents and teachers warning me not to put my hands in my mouth and wash them regularly because these very reasons. I teach my kids the same thing. It's called common sense. As for air hadndlers pumping MRSA dust into hospitals, nursing homes and vets, you are correct, these places carry a much higher risk of infection and colonization. I trust that as a medical proffessional you take the propper precautions to best avoid passing it on. Nothing is full proof of course, but I'm sure you do what you can. But for most people who don't frequent these places, they're day to day lives should not be lived in fear of this. Remember West Nile? I think you see where I'm going.Fact of the matter is that good hygiene, situational awareness, and avoiding contact is about all a person can do. I'm not saying this is something that the medical community shouldn't be vigilent about. Just that no one needs to be hitting the panic button just yet.[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 11:37 AM. scaremongering, i worry about other things than MRSAthe media is all omg mrsaim tryin to say that omg a large portion of the community already has mrsa and they aint dead yet.like i said im most likely colonized, but its not worth it to me to be tested and deal with a long cycle of vanc.now, if i get a giant boil or something somewhere, then yeah id go get it lanced and cultured.in the meantime, ill just make sure to not pick my nose and then do patient care
1/16/2008 1:32:39 PM
does being colonized mean your immune or something
1/16/2008 3:03:47 PM
I think it means you're a carrier, but it has not actively attacked your body yet (and may not ever). But I'm no medical professional...

my husband got MRSA through an IV at the hospital (from them not cleaning the fucking IV entrance with a swab) - its fucking horrible, hes had 3 I&Ds to cut out the infection out of his arm which looks so fucked up now and gets Vancomycin at least 10 times a week, and hes pretty much resistant to the Vanc nowthe infection started at the IV spot while he was admitted in the hospital for something else, so they blame theirselves for it[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 4:44 PM. if im not mistaken MRSA has been the 4th leading cause of hospital deaths dense roughly the 70's and the 1st leading cause of nosocomial infections for shit, years
1/16/2008 5:06:10 PM
I had a pretty nasty MRSA encounter last March. It started as a tiny bump on my knee on a Sunday. It looked like a small whitehead from an ingrown hair. I left for New Jersey on Monday for work. By Tuesday/Wednesday I realized something was up. I ended up putting off going to the doctor until the following Friday when I was getting back to Raleigh. By that point I couldn't put any weight on my leg and my veins were tracking up my leg. I went to the doctor Friday and was given an antiobiotic and sent away. I woke up Saturday with all kinds of fluids coming out of a tiny hole that had opened on top of the 'lump" that had developed. I'll spare everyone the nasty details but suffice it to say there was a lot of infection in there. When they sliced me open at the hospital they said I was a couple days away from possibly losing my leg. It ended up leading to dermatitis. All around not a good time and I sure as hell learned my lesson about putting off a doctor's visit.
1/16/2008 8:41:04 PM
i actually learned the exact same lesson after being bitten (unknowingly) by a brown recluse at this girls beach house a couple years ago. it started out as what looked like a whitehead on my thigh and by the end of the week it was the size of a nickel and was spawning new spots from underneath my skin. fucking scary at the time, but a good story now that it's past[Edited on January 17, 2008 at 12:40 AM.
