There's still a Rose's in J-ville. It's ghetto as shit, I'm surprised it's still in biz.

Clarks Sporting Goods

lol, this was my first real job. They still exist, but not the retail side. They just do large scale equipment orders for highschools, etc.

There certainly aren't any left around here, but I think they're still "Big on the Pig" in some rural areas south of here.

Interesting fact: The building on Hillsborough that now houses Red Hot & Blue (the old Darryl's location) contained a Piggly Wiggly years and years ago.

yeah, it may have just been official... but they have had a small corner of the trophy house for over a year now. It's still not a full sporting goods retail store like they used to be. Just couldn't compete with Dick's/Sports Authority

The store I worked at couldn't either, and hadn't tried since the 80's. They had found their niche and made a killing off of it. Every team in the region went there.

It was a damn fun hs/first job, too. You talked sports all day, played with equipment, and made fun of customers.

I remember when Montgomery Ward was big. I thought of it as being almost as big as Sears when I was growing up. I don't even know where I could find one now.

I was just about to post Montgomery Ward. The mention of Service Merchandise made me think of it eventually, since my Dad was an assistant manager at the Greensboro Service Merchandise back in the day. It was across from Carolina Circle Mall, which had...a Montgomery Ward.

Speaking of old school retail, Carolina Circle Mall as a whole fits the category. Gone and bulldozed years ago. I remember going there when I was little; they used to have an ice skating rink in the middle of the place.

^^ I always wanted to sneak out there and grab those letters off Tarrytown after it flooded. I figured I could at least spell out "GET RAD" in giant letters on the roof of my house.

Could also spell "RAW DOG" if you're into that sort of thing.

Wait, wasn't there a department store called "Nickels" in the early 80's? I googled it and didn't find anything, but I'm almost sure there was.

Interesting fact: The now restaurant/store at 5 points, "NOFO's At the Pig," used to be a Piggly Wiggly

and there's plenty of Piggly Wiggly's in Eastern NC

McCrory
Woolworth
Heilig-Meyers

Aw shit, how could I forget them? At Four Seasons mall, right? (I guess there were others, too...)

I think Food Town got bought out by Harris Teeter, just like Big Star did. (or was that Food World...)

A few more I thought of:
Rhodes Furniture (just recently expired)
Woolco
Plej's
PACE

^^^At least a third of those have already been mentioned.

man Service Merchandise and Brendle's were the two i was coming in here to post when i reat the thread title. I used to love going to either of those.

McCrory's omg. I haven't thought about that store in a long time. There used to be one in the Carolina Mall in Concord. That is where I got all my X-Men cards when i was young

There used to be a toystore on Independence Blvd in Charlotte a long time ago that i used to go into a lot. I can't remember what it was called (my mind wants to say kangaroo toys or something but i know thats not right). Does anyone recall it?

Those two, along with Best Products, were the three big players in the "catalog store" genre, which is now completely extinct itself. Remember how, for the big items, once you knew what you wanted from checking out the displays, you'd hand them a ticket and a bit later your merchandise would come out from the warehouse on a conveyor belt behind the registers? We did a LOT of our shopping at Best and Service Merchandise when I was little.

^Fucking shit I don't know how I forgot that.

I worked there.

Greensboro location, Four Seasons Mall, basement level, from late '95 until it closed in summer '97.

And no, for those of you who aren't familiar with it, it wasn't an "adult" bookstore.
