it started a couple days ago with my computer shutting off by itself and the power light turning orange and blinking 3 times repeating. I had to hold the power button in to turn it completely off (it would not simply turn back on) Then turned it back on and it worked for about 12 hours, same problem; same solution: worked for about 3 hours. same problem, worked about 10 mins same problem.... eventually it got to the point of the power light blinking green for an instant and going to blinking orange before you'd even hear the fans start. left it off for a day and turned it on and it worked for about 10 mins before same problem. I've tried a different power supply with no change.

any ideas? all i can imagine is CPU overheating or maybe memory....

Make sure all the fans are working. Check your temps from the BIOS.
