i was talking on the phone tonight, then heard static, then the line went dead. and for over an hour i haven't been able to receive calls or dial. AND my phone sometimes says "no service" sometimes says "searching for service." when i call someone it will say "calling...." but there is never a ring. already tried taking out phone battery, etc, turning phone off blah blah blah. i don't think it is my phone anyway. i wasn't doing anything except sitting and talking. what gives?

In this day and age, why would you have anything other than Verizon or AT&T?

Is this Alltel shit just in NC? Here in Georgia its Verizon, ATT, or at worst, Sprint or Nextel. And thats just for the rednecks. Why you would go with a small, unreliable service like Alltell is beyond me, and it looks like you are paying the price too.

well i mean i guess my real question is do cellular service outages actually happen? and if so how does one find out if that is what is causing the problem or not. i mean clearly i can't call alltel and ask because my cell phone is my only phone. ughh this is so annoying. i guess i'll have to wait until tomorrow to figure it out. this has just never happened before so i didn't think it was my phone. but maybe it is. either way, its wayyy annoying.

Sprint would not work in my own house and a few other select locations I am always around.... Alltel does.... Therefore, for me... Alltel>>>>>>Sprint

Expensive? I pay $60 a month for 800min. That includes VM, Caller ID, 500 texts, 5mb data, 10,000 nights(after 7pm) and weekends AND rollover minutes. Which almost never expire. I have over 3000 rollovers on my account right now.

I seriosly do not undersand how everone does not have AT&T. Rollover is the shit, why waste minutes you dont use? That is just stupid. Its not like the plans from company to company are that drastically different. AT&T also has the best phones all around IMO.

Alltel actually has just as good coverage as Verizon in NC. Verizon and Alltel roam on each others networks.

yea rollover is good.

i got a family plan like 2.5yrs ago. no text, no media or internet. just minutes.

we pay $60 too, so you can see the problem.

So for real, is this Alltell just a regional NC cell thing now? It used to be in GA like 5 years ago or so, but just got phased out by the larger carriers. I cant recall anyone outside of NC I know who has it.

And how much cheaper can Alltel be that you would choose it over a major national carrier?

ugh i don't know i feel like i always have the worst cellphone provider. my DAD chooses them and we all get stuck on the same plan. except for him, he ofcourse gets his own plan witha different provider. but first we had at&t (when it sucked) then suncom (why...i have no idea, i feel like suncom is THE absolute worst) and once i complained about suncom enough he switched us to alltel. sigh...no one ever listens to what i want

right now all i want is to not get chopped up in my sleep because my phone doesn't work and i have no way to call 911

I have had Alltel for years. I travel all over NC (mostly to Charlotte and back now), up to DC and into SC. Every now and then, NOT often, I'll lose signal when I'm switching towers or I'm running NC52 to I-77 (in the backwoods). I have the from anywhere to anywhere plan with 750/unlimited and my cirlce of friends is full

No complaints here.

Anyone know if Alltel offers any kind of credit towards a new phone every 2 years or something like that. I know some of the other large carriers will give you like $50 towards a new phone for updating your contract.

I pay $30/month for 500 mins anytime, unlimited text, unlimited data, unlimited night and weekend and I'm on Sprint. Also, keep in mind that sprint night starts at 7. I agree with you that AT&T has better looking phones, but sprint got them beat on service price.

I love how people act like they wouldn't be OK with it if their parents paid for their cell. I was perfectly fine paying for my own cell service in college. My family had a plan with 3 lines (my mom, dad and brother) but my Dad got a Blackberry for work so we had a line that no one was using. I was going to switch service form Sprint anyway so they offered to give me the Verizon AT&T line that was open anyway for free (since my older sister still had 2 years left on her contract)...

Being in grad school I wasn't about to turn down free cell service... and I'd bitch about it all I want if it didn't work...

[Edited on January 12, 2008 at 10:20 AM. Reason : of course I have a blackberry for work now too but I like my NC cell # via Verizon still...]

no, it doesn't matter who is paying for it. as long as it is being paid for, there is an expectation that the service works.

^^I'm saying that when you're not the one paying, don't bitch about the provider you have. If you paid, then you've earned that right.
And honestly, I prefer paying my bills. I realize most people wouldn't, but my parents are the type who would say 'we pay for your cell phone bill. If you want to keep your service, you will commit to chaufferring your sister for the next three months to chorus practice at 9am on saturdays' I realize not everyone's parents are like that, though. Nor are they like my best friend's dad, who will simply not pay the bill, out of laziness, and then with no warning, she's left without a cell phone for a couple days while he pulls his head from his ass.

^I like how you didn't put 'reasonable' in front of expectation This is still cell phone providers we're talking about.

I've been paying my own cell bill since I was 17, not that who pays the bill is really relevant to the issue.

I've had Alltel the whole time, and I love them. I have service where most people do not and they are just good in general, and affordable. I am about to get my Dad a line in my name, so my part of the bill will actually decrease.

wow lets be as judgemental as possible. yes, my parents offered to keep me on my same plan that they pay for when i graduated from college because i am financing my own education which is $30,000 a year just for tuition (i know the next thing you will bitch about is how lots of people pay their own tuition. i get it, but lots of parents also pay their kids cell phone bills into their 20s...i know peoples parents who will pay for their kids' tuition as long as they stay in school). i still have living expenses AND i bought my own condo which i make the mortgage payments on. i do pay my own bills, every single one of them except my cell phone. which clearly makes me ridiculously spoiled and immature seeing as how it saves me um...probably 15-20 a month for my 1/3 of the plan.

if the service doesn't work, it is completely irrelevant whether or not i pay for it myself. someone is paying for it. when you pay money for a service, you expect that it will work. i don't know a lot about alltel because i haven't had it long. this is why i posed the question.

Don't mind ambrosia. She hates anyone who's better off in life that she is.

I used to have Alltel, but it had lousy coverage in my office and at my house, so I switched to AT&T.

I <3 my Alltel. Mostly because everyone I talk to has it and those who don't I can add to my circle, so I never use any of my minutes. Also, i've never had any problems with service anywhere I've been. Works well at my grandparents in po-dunk, Pennsylvania, worked well in Puerto Rico. So, there.

Ahahha, you're a goddamn idiot. Verizon, AT&T, Cingular, etc. all suck ass. They are really expensive for such shitty service.

I have Alltel and I have NEVER had service problems, even in the mountains of WVa where NO ONE else had service.

khcadwal, either you fucked up your phone (which I'm guessing is what happened - probably water damage) or the local tower had a problem which is already fixed.

I guess I just wasn't clear enough: bitching about a service that costs money is reserved for those who actually pay for it.

It's kinda like voting: you don't deserve to bitch if you didn't vote.

and i guess i wasn't clear enough: even if i'm not paying for it, someone is. and that someone is my dad. my dad doesn't use the same service, so the only way he is going to know if there is a problem is if i tell him (i believe your term is "bitch").

and no, cell phone service isn't like voting. you pay for cell phone service. you do not pay to vote. and regardless of whether or not i pay, i still use the service. and again, someone is paying for it and they only way they will know if something is wrong with the service or not is if i let them know.

also, this is the only time this has happened to me and that is why i was asking whether or not anyone else has alltel or has experienced problems with it.

In some respects, you're right. But in the 'unless you participated in the decision-making process, you have no room to bitch' aspect, it is like voting.

you're getting something at no cost to you.

And you're complaining. To us. In addition to/When you should be complaining to the person whose dollars have a voice.

I do understand how frustrating it is to not have a cell phone work.

[Edited on January 12, 2008 at 12:26 PM. Reason : Keep going. I'm stuck at work til 530, and can be a raging cunt all day long]

By the way, that wasn't a bitchy "In case I wasn't clear enough". Like anyone else, I do not choose the correct words to convey my meaning 100% of the time. It wasn't sarcastic.

i've had alltel for a few years now and never had any problems, and its not just a NC thing... I don't think they have many places far west or up north
