$20/month is pretty pricey.....
storage and transfer are cheap. Those same storage/transfer specs are $2/mo at 1and1, and at $10/mo you get 300GB storage & 3TB transfer, and SSH access starts with the $5 plan. ... and it's not CPanel.

what are you installing that you weren't able to install before? and i, personally, love cpanel

its a VPS (virtual private server) on Xen, not shared hosting like dreamhost/bluehost/etc where you will get suspended for bringing in a decent load of traffic.

This is my worst problem with discount hosts (I'm on BlueHost), getting hand-in-face because of resource usage or something. Its fine for my blog or throwaway sites, but not for hosting something commercial that needs to be up 24x7. this isn't shared hosting. shared hosting sucks if you have anything other than a basic website.

there's a reason people get dedicated servers and not just some stupid 600GB plan from a host.

for what it is, it's an excellent deal.

Is there anyway to get a massive amount of data to a server besides regular uploading? I have several hundred gigs if not a TB of storage available at 1and1 but have no decent way of uploading that much data reliably. I'd like to backup an entire fileserver (over 100gb). Is there anyway I can mail them an external hard drive and they copy everything over to the server or something? I mean, I know there's probably no way in hell they would..but figured I'd ask.

I've had this issue once before and all i did was zip up the data and in just put it in a www dir and used wget from the new machine to get it or you could FTP - what ever you choose.

where is the file server?
if it is hosted already at another webhost, then you can do a direct transfer using some tool, like wget or something like that.
but if you have the actual server and data at your house..... i dunno

Yeah it's a server at work. We have a pretty good backup system but rarely do full off site backups. If the place burned down or a fire in the server room destroyed server/backups it would be impossible to get that data back.

I'll see how much data it actually is tomorrow and maybe zip/upload 10gb files at a time.

edit: we'd have to get the pro version which is like $.50/gb.. gonna see how much space I'd need tomorrow. Might be VERY worth it. Other solutions we were looking at were pricing out much higher

Why don't you just take a backup drive home with you? Sure it's not on the web, but if you are just concerned about fire then take it home and put it in a fire proof box, or get a safe deposit box at a bank, or bury it in your back yard.

I'm just gonna put it on an external drive that we have already, hook it to my laptop and backup that drive to a mozy account. That should work well since it'll do incremental backups after the first time and is only $4.99 a month
