pageloads? is a user still online if they leave their browser open for a few hours?

how can tww tell if someone is not online, but didnt press logout?

i believe it times out after 15min. of no activity and says your offline - any activity i would assume enables you being online tho

i thought that as long as you were connected to the page it showed you as online, becuase I have seen peoples names on there who certainly aren't there and haven't been for a while.

Session variables?
They time out after 20 minutes.

every 5 minutes we check our database and pull the distinct sessionIDs of all of the impressions that we have had in the last 20 minutes. this is where the count comes from. then we pull all of the session info from these sessionIDs. some sessions are anonymous, others are authenticated. from the authenticated sessions, we get the list of users.
