i was always a linksys fan, but when it came time to buy a router for myself, I went for a d-link that was on clearance, and it's never had problems, but the one i'm using now (my roommate's d-link, which we use for the whole apartment), kicks me off a few times a day, and recently a few times an hour[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 9:50 AM. home-and this is the second linksys router we've had in 2.5 years, and i'm thinkin it might soon be time to buy another wireless router- any suggestions on other brands?
1/3/2008 9:50:13 AM
I've noticed problems like that MUCH more prevalent in the last few years--ever since they did whatever merger or partnership with cisco or whatever it is they're doing now. I haven't bought any wireless routers or AP's that actually worked consistently, I've had to return basically anything I've purchased. At one point I had a cheapo linksys router routing internet access for a 50+ person office and it never had a single problem in the year or so we used it. We "upgraded" to a new one (linksys) with built in VPN capabilities and everything went to shit, 3 replacements later and after several consulting firms told me I didn't know what I was doing then had the exact same problems (that they couldn't solve either)I was having we ended up biting the bullet and going with cisco hardware like we should have to begin with./rant[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 9:55 AM. Reason : I'd go with this http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5128717]unless you'll never use N, then go with something cheap that doesn't have it. I'll probably never buy anything from linksys again[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 9:55 AM. Reason : one more time]

i haven't come across a router that i haven't had to constantly manually reseti have a crappy belkin that's been doing the best out of all the routers i've tried (d-link, netgear) and i still have to reset that thing about once a week or so
1/3/2008 9:59:06 AM
I'm so happy to have cisco hardware now... don't have to do shit, everything just works for months straight without a problem.Hell, you could probably get an old cisco 1200 series AP for your wireless, that'd be reliable as shit. Obviously not as fast as N but plenty for internet browsing.

i rarely have problems with my liknsys wireless router.its usually the modem that that just quits working whenever it feels like it. usually at least 6-10 times a day.
1/3/2008 10:02:21 AM
I've never had to manually reset our d-link. my personal d-link has never had problems. my apartment's d-link kicks you off once or a few times a day, but reconnects automatically in less than a minute (except for lately, it kicks you off a few times an hour, but I never have to reset). I have linksys at both of my parent's houses, and my brother as linksys, never had problems with any of them.[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 10:04 AM. Reason : ./]come to think about it, it's probably TWC's shitty service/modem, that's kicking me off, not my router. i need to check that out[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 10:04 AM. Reason : .]
