is a "forced fun" holiday?? Maybe it's just my mood this year, but it seems that every year's whole debacle leading up to NYE of "where to go" and "what to do" is just fricking stressful--takes the fun out of the whole thing. And it just gets worse every year.

I think I'm done with NYE

or I'm just a party pooper

or both!

New Years is *the* holiday in many countries around the world, just not so much in the US. I personally love getting together with my friends on NY and family on Christmas.

I don't feel like it's forced fun, but I HAVE noticed a distinct lack of options the last couple of years. It used to be there were a million things to choose from - now there's only a few and nothing appeals to me. Maybe the hype just isn't there anymore?

the luster wore off when you can't watch 5 minutes of it on TV without seeing 3 minutes of commercials.

I do have a gig playin' that night though - get to break out the new electric

New Years' is my BIRTHDAY!!!

That being said, I think I'm more stressed out that anyone - I have to pick out the venue for the party this year (Marvin on 14th St NW Washington DC in case anyone is in town) and throw an afterparty at my house.

i feel like it's forced fun

it's like you want everyone to be doing the same thing, but no one does

plus it's cold outside

^^Hmmm, least you know people will always be up for celebrating your birthday...unless they're someone like me

^exactly.

like this year, i wouldn't be surprised if i spent it without my bf...sad, but true. i'm just not feeling it. i think i've been hyping it up too much over the years, doing basically the same thing since i was 16, and b/c none have really been memorable, i'm just saying fuck it. least not memorable in a good way. :-/

cough cough, guitar player, cough cough DC, good lord.

anyway. I like New Years Eve, as its known in the non-internet world, because its one of the few holidays that you spend with your friends instead of your family.

im excited to spend it with my GF this year. i tend to really like new years anyways but it is a hassle. for years ive gone out of town...even if it was just to Charlotte. I would really like to spend New Years in New Orleans once and i would like to do the the big NYC thing before i die

my family doesn't live where my friends do, so spending time with both on the holidays isn't possible.

Its the celebration of a largely arbitrary date, so yes it is pointless. We just like excuses to get drunk and act out on repressed sexual urges here in the US.

Well yeah, if you get your rocks off celebrating arbitrary dates, more power to you. My preference is to go to bed early, get up early, and have the first 12 hours of the day practically to myself.

this is the first year in a loooong time i haven't planned something elaborate like a roadtrip or a big party... i'm gonna let everyone else worry about it and i will probably decide on the 30th or 31st what i'll be doing that evening

I dont care what I do on NYE as long as it involves kissing Allie at midnight and punching ^ in the face at some point

I wanna punch Brett in the face too!

NYE hasn't been nearly as much fun since that year I ate a roll with a bunch of folks.

its more forced every year you get older...until you get old, then you're like "wow i'm alive for another year lets celebrate"

not reading the whole thread but i agree with the forced fun part. sometimes its so forced it ends up being completely NOT fun. or maybe its that theres all this hype about it but i never have more fun that night than any other night when i go out and party. i get all excited and then i'm just let down by the averageness of it.

We're having sake on NYE at home, but my parents prefer beer and my sister doesn't drink.

So I might likely end up with the whole bottle.

THAT is not forced fun.
