Once a long long time ago, I worked in a carpet store.

REPLACE THE DAMNED PAD. And once you reach a certain point, thicker is not better.

if the pad has blood stains or anything else they can trace with luminol on it, it needs to go.

You've obvious never seen how ridiculously fucking nasty carpet pads get, even after only a year of light use.

If you really want to be sanitary, replace it with vinyl/tile/fake wood/etc.
