half the government (state/federal/local) jobs could be considered "nonessential", but my job, at least, is relatively beneficial and necessary...but bureaucracy rules and as it's such an inefficient system, i find myself with a lot of free time

not necessarily...i worked for the feds for nearly 3 years and when i got THAT job, they only offered $2000 more a year than the state one i was offered...the vacation/sick rate was the same (but maybe that's because i had worked for the state previously and continued at the level)...i don't suppose one can always say that working for one over the other is better, since it tends to be pretty particular to the field and the location...plus, in my case, the benefits offered by the state are better in this position, well worth the difference in pay

about the comp, i don't know about all state employees, but i do
