I need to title my car to someone else. Do I just need to sign the title to them and have a notary stamp?Do they need anything else to go to the DMV and get a license plate?

fill out the top section (transfer of title) on the back of the title and have it notarizedthey're going to have to fill out the bottom section on the back of the title (application for new title) and have it notarized. there will be a notary at the dmv that can do this, but it'll cost a few bucks ($3 iirc) and cash only. or you can have that part already filled out when you have the top section notarized.[Edited on December 18, 2007 at 4:11 PM. Reason : assuming it is already titled in NC (top/bottom section)]

this is your solution to a 30 day temporary problem? i'm not sure you are taking everything into accountif it were easy and simple to do something like this i imagine everyone would do it

^ shh. I think they need to take proof of insurance to the license plate office too?I am probably gonna do the title at the UPS store tonight and then the person can go get a plate tomorrow.
12/18/2007 4:20:21 PM
yes, you need proof of insurance

and money. title fee and HUT
12/18/2007 4:21:47 PM
WAT?how much is that?

Go to any bank, they can notarize for free (at least most do). I know Bank of America does it, but perhaps its because I have accounts with them.

i got my bike title notarized for free at a car dealership. this past weekend.

you're looking at about $90-100 or so by the time it's all said and done. tax, tags, registration, etc.
12/18/2007 6:35:19 PM
easiest thing to do is go to the DMV with the person and have them make sure it's filled out right. I've had friends who forgot to fill something out or something and had to get it re-notarized

The taxes depend on the vehicle. I've had everything from $75ish to $400ish depending on the vehicle.
12/19/2007 9:27:58 AM
^you're talking property taxes. those don't come until later. at the time of title transfer, it's just highway use tax which is a set price. i want to say it's like $52 now or something?
12/19/2007 12:58:25 PM
The Highway Use Tax is 3% of the vehicle's value. So, on a $20,000 vehicle you're looking at a $600 Highway Use Tax. How do you own like 15 vehicles without knowing this? http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_services/registrationtitling/howToRegister.htmlSee the "Fee Requirements" section.[Edited on December 19, 2007 at 1:04 PM. yeah, i do know that. i assumed we were talking about a gift from the op's wording, which is:
12/19/2007 1:34:10 PM
you only have to do highway tax fee if you wanna drive the vehicle correct?or is that what the convo is about. i havnt read
12/19/2007 1:43:04 PM
true HUT isnt part of the title transfer, it is part of the registration (ie, getting a plate)[Edited on December 19, 2007 at 1:46 PM. Reason : as is proof of insurance]
12/19/2007 1:45:57 PM
^^no, i've payed hut on vehicles that i only transferred the title on (i.e., wasn't tagging/registering it). in fact, i just did it a couple of weeks ago for one. pretty stupid, they should just call it sales tax... that's what it is.[Edited on December 19, 2007 at 2:04 PM. Reason : .]

Vote for a candidate supporting the Fair Tax (http://www.fairtax.org) and you can maybe avoid some of these fees in the future.
12/19/2007 2:09:43 PM
and who is that candidate? please say ron paul

What a crock of shit.

I think ron paul does support it because he used to be libertarian, I know mike huckabee says he does but I don't know how much I can trust that considering he says he's for getting rid of the IRS but he increased ridiculous amounts of taxes during his time as governor.
