Searched and didn't see an Evo X thread within the past 6 months...http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/112_0801_mitsubishi_lancer_evolution_comparison/road_test_data.htmlEvo IX : 13.4 sec @ 102.2 mphEvo X (5 speed): 14.0 sec @ 96.9 mphwell they bloated the Evo X with way extra weight (300lbs) just like they had progressively done with the Eclipse (and look how well that's selling), and now it's significantly slower. It's also slower on the track, although marginally improved in braking and skidpad. My prediction: Enthusiasts will stop buying it because it doesn't have the same performance and regular people won't buy it because, well, it's still a Mitsubishi.[Edited on December 12, 2007 at 12:55 AM. Reason : it's also a couple seconds slower on their track, not just in a straight line]
12/12/2007 12:52:07 AM
I'm not gonna buy it because it looks uglier than the Evo IX
12/12/2007 1:12:27 AM
none of that matters. the real question is whether the newly designed engine will be as bullet proof as 4g63, which had the luxury of time to develop into what it is now - a strong, reliable engine that will take power mods without too much fuss.
12/12/2007 1:13:29 AM
You didn't see the "official EVO thread" on this very page?
12/12/2007 3:16:14 AM
haha, that's a joke.in their defense, they can be made considerably faster on the cheap.
12/12/2007 3:34:43 AM
Jap cars always get bigger model to model. Look at the early 90s Accord- its like a foot smaller than a modern Civic. They just assume thats what America wants- bigger
12/12/2007 8:11:37 AM
^sucks that people associate getting bigger with getting better. If people read in some article that interior space is down by so-and-so cubic feet, legroom is down by so-and-so inches, then that just sounds bad. That's when companies bring over the Fit, Versa and Yaris
12/12/2007 8:28:49 AM
its a freaking EVO. no one would buy it to begin with.
12/12/2007 9:35:20 AM
^ exactly my point. Mitsu tries to go more mainstream with a car that is niche, and now not even the old buyers will want it.
12/12/2007 9:36:56 AM
well i was just kidding.but still. are you trying to make this into an arguement?i dont think it matters.a lot of cars are slower nowadays. its no big deal. whats the price difference
12/12/2007 9:46:03 AM
12/12/2007 10:03:46 AM
engine efficiencies go up as they pack on the lbs for the most part.or in chevy's case they make the sum-bitch bigger
12/12/2007 12:17:18 PM
I'm so sick of new cars. Everything's bigger and heavier. Back in the day a car with 300hp was a serious performer. Now its just good for 6 second 0-60 times thanks to the bloated weight.Fucking assholes.
12/12/2007 1:19:05 PM
^ Yes it's heavier, but you're supposed to be safer and it's more comfy... you know... air bags, mushy seats, sound deadening material, the fancy stuff that us fat Americans dream of.
12/12/2007 3:17:27 PM
Have you ever ridden in the last EVO? Not something you'd want to do often. I mean, the EVO 9 is hardcore and all but we're talking about an AWD car with horrid. weight distribution so it's not like they just came out with a 4000lbs Elise. Ahmet

i still think safety features shouldn't be mandatory... i mean if i want to buy something that is as safe as an ac-ace with a big block strapped into it i think that should be my right.
12/12/2007 4:31:17 PM

I'm not making a general statement about cars. I'm talking about Mitsubishi's poor decision to give a car mass appeal when it is incapable of mass appeal a priori.
12/12/2007 6:01:17 PM
lets compare engine noise.older cars win

Something's heavier doesn't mean it won't handle as well. Suspension engineering has come a long way. Have you seen the GRM issue where they compare a Porsche 356 to a Honda Minivan? The minivan was faster around an auto-x course, as well as all other measures of performance, even when there were 6 (or was it 7) people in it...I actually auto-xed a new top of the line Accord Coupe (mostly same running gear as a sedan) a few years ago, it actually did quite well. With only tires, I have no doubt that a new Accord can lap faster than a 90s Prelude Si at any road course. I pick those two because I have experience with them. Chasis/suspension engineering goes a long way... PS: This is not to say that I have the slightest interest in owning any of the above, except for the slowest/worst performing of the bunch, the 356. Ahmet
12/12/2007 10:02:37 PM
I think the new evo looks good. Nothing wrong with a slow car!I have two!
12/12/2007 10:08:46 PM
The 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 ran a 13.8 bone stock.I'm just sayin.

12/13/2007 12:54:44 AM
Well the ride isn't refined is the point. And neither is this car, in comparison to other carsBut its slower.Hmmmm.
12/13/2007 12:58:43 AM
I think the ride is rather amazing (in that it's so good for a suspension that's stiff and offers a lot of grip), but unfortunately what I care more about is noise, and the EVO (9 anyway) has plenty of it. Wind noise and engine droan that I can't stand. I still think about owning a 9 or an 8 someday, because the cars maybe special enough, but it's what kept me away from Hondas in high school when I couldn't afford something more expensive.Maybe I'm a wuss though, this coming from the guy that routinely has the only car with stock exhaust at track events, that runs 3 mufflers on a turbocharged car, and drives with ear plugs for long drives in anything this side of a BMW 5 series. I HATE noise.**I can, and will put up with noise that's good enough, like a modified LSx motor or a Porsche GT3. Ahmet

12/13/2007 1:04:45 AM
^^ yeah, i agree. i think the ride is amazingly good for what it is--but it is loud.but then again, since about '99-2000 or so, i've owned a Wrangler, a Miata, and an S2000 (and a 330ci for about 3 months)...so my perceptions of noise (and lots of other things about cars) are really skewed...so the Evo isn't intrusively loud to me.I don't really see why ANYONE is going to buy the new Evo X, though. [Edited on December 13, 2007 at 1:30 AM. Reason : asdf]

Mark, I've owned close to 3 dozen vehicles, including two new Hondas. I have not owned anything fwd from Japan by choice. I remember dumping my first car, a hand me down Prelude Si for my first Porsche 944, even though I had to pay for the difference. Being a grease monkey at Good Year sucked, but it beat having to put up w/the hamster torture coming from under the hood... Next my parents gave me a new Accord. I promptly gave that car to my sister and picked up my first "2nd car", a VW Jetta GLi. I'd rather own a 5 year old VW than a new Honda, which is kind of my point. I never choose a Honda on my own Accord -eheh. Instead I went through; 7 944 Turbos, 3 Turbo Volvos, 4 more VWs, 8 BMWs and so on. Duke, I drive a lot. 30k miles in the last 11 months added to the M3, for example. Around town the EVO is great, on the highway, too loud for me. Ride is excellent, just a bit more sound deadening in the right places would've been great (on the leading edge of the roof between the a pillars +around the lower firewall). EVO 10 seems to suck, I personally have 0 interest in it. Oh well...Ahmet
12/13/2007 3:18:17 AM
BTW did you ever do that Bushur package? I'd like to see your Mitsu hamster dance if you have.Ahmet
12/13/2007 3:22:04 AM
man why the Honda hate? A few of their fwd offerings through the years have been pretty sportying.[Edited on December 13, 2007 at 1:30 PM. Reason : Not saying they're awesome, but preferable to a lot of VWs]

TKE, I like two Hondas, the Integra Hype-R and the S2k. Both are too loud, and have engine noise that I can't stand to own them however. I don't dislike Honda any more than some other Japanese manufacturer (in fact, they're my favorite), but by and large I don't like Japanese/American cars. The former doesn't feel substantial, the latter lacks build quality. There are of course exceptions. The EVO is a good example. I doubt I'm the only one who wouldn't consider anything made by Mitsubishi other than the EVO.Marky, for the price of any Honda, I'd rather own something else, this I've demonstrated several times with the cars I've chosen to buy. I've bought and sold many cars for $10-15k, obviously I could've owned some Honda instead. If you mean new Hondas, well I chose to give away my new Accord EX V6 coupe (admittedly a decent car in it's own right), instead to own another Porsche 944 Turbo. Currently, I'm talking the gf into selling her 2006 Civic Si for something else (a Saab?). Look at me, the next car maybe a newer 996, but there's no way in hell I'd spend $25k to pick up a Honda instead, no sir. Don't blame me though, you wouldn't do it either.Bushur? Ahmet
12/13/2007 2:05:39 PM
996 turbo = i want one really bad but i can't drive and would have to trade in 2 cars i'm really attached to to pull it off. So i don't think i will and i know the regular one is nice too but i'd rather have a vette and i don't really like them either. i think my real next car is still looking to be a saabaru or a legacy gt.(and keep my classic and my suv)
12/13/2007 2:12:42 PM
Baonest, is that so hard to believe? I'm sure you could own a Cavalier that's 5 years newer than your Integra for the same price. My cousin thought my 1 owner 40k mile, all orig body work, w/full records Porsche 944 Turbo S was worth "like $2000" because it was "from the 80s"... That car sold in 3 days at my asking price (above $15k obviously), and wasn't advertised anywhere but mentioned in a web forum, once.Ahmet
12/13/2007 2:15:28 PM
I'm really liking the 996 GT3 a lot. $70k could grab one. Of courseone could have a 5 series for that kind of money, or a Chevy Duallie pick up. Would you? Of course not (well, some might, and do), this is my point.Ahmet
12/13/2007 2:17:40 PM
Porsches and Italian cars are about the only 80s cars worth anything. And honestly, I have learned the opposite lesson. I would rather have a 5 year old Honda or Toyota than a brand new Cavalier. My 2001 Cavalier back in highschool was brand new and also a POS. It had all sorts of random suspension and electrical problems by 40k.

12/13/2007 4:02:47 PM
is a porsche 944 turbo going to be THAT smooth, solid and quiet? I wouldnt have thought so. Anything early 90's and before = now rattling apart
12/13/2007 5:21:38 PM
Even if it is slower, at least it looks better.Wait. SHIT.

12/14/2007 12:52:36 AM
I wouldn't actually listen to ahmet. He drives a e36 -with all the windows down when applicable-.Its not significantly more quiet then an evo.
12/14/2007 2:41:53 AM
how much did getting new tires help with the road noise? It seems like most of what i hear comes from the tires...
12/14/2007 9:35:02 AM
you want to talk about some road noiseill give you a ride in the blow dryer on wheels
12/14/2007 9:37:47 AM
the sports tires make more noise.get some econo ones and call it a day. there really isnt a reason folks should be driving around on anything more than economy tires
