I got a speeding ticket today on 64 right outside of siler city, from what I've heard it's a common speed trap area. The ticket was for 73 in a 55, so 18 over. The officer didn't have me sign anything, he just handed me the citation and told me when my court date was. I've been looking around the internet and have read some things saying I could lose my license, it could be a felony, all sorts of nasty stuff I don't need in my life. Points on your license drop off after three years, and ironically (although it would be my luck) the last 3 points on my license (from a motor vehicle accident) were supposed to drop off TOMORROW (today made 2 years 364 days). I'm looking for any advice anybody has to give as far as getting an attorney, using my prayer for judgement (I haven't used it yet), or any other suggestions. Also, and I know this is a statement made in futility... but please spare the sarcasm/hating.

if you're really nice you might get the DA to reduce it to 9 over

otherwise since you already have 3 points on your license, i'd use the PJC.

How do I do a prayer for judgement? Is this something I can take care of before the court date or do I request it at the hearing?

get a lawyer, take the 8 hour class, call it a day.

.... that is, if your time and no points is worth it to you.

i have plenty of experience with speeding tickets.

if this is your second ticket, within 3 years, take the 4 or 8 hour class/ for your speed i dont recall which one is necessary/ before you go to court. you can either get a lawyer, and save yourself the time to go to court and deal with all the bull shit or you can go yourself. Present your certificate and tell them youve learned your lesson...etc. your pjc might or might not work. Take the 4/8 hour saftey driving class and/or get a lawyer to go to court for you. Shit is a big hassle. So depending if you have the cash, do it or dont.

Speaking of speeding tickets, cops usually lay off people who drive for a living don't they? A cop said something to that affect while we were talking last time I got pulled. If that's so, then doesn't that mean the WingZone guy I saw pulled on hilsboro must have been driving like a complete douche and nearly hit 12 people or something?

by the time you arrive for your court date, your record will be clean. go early, talk to the DA, get it reduced to 9 over, save your PJC for your 2nd ticket.

Get a lawyer, not a shitty one. Decent lawyer is way cheaper than paying off the ticket and increased insurance costs. Just a little more money up front. You'll probably have to do classes too. Technically, 15 over can be considered reckless driving which is a huge no-no but that won't happen unless the cop totally bwns you in court.

There is only one spot in the Pittsboro area where it is 65 mph on hwy 64. Its only like 15 miles long too. How do you justify calling it a speed trap?

dont get a fucking lawyer... christ. I have had 2 tickets for 20+, one not too long ago. No big deal.

You go in to the assigned courtroom area, and when they ask how you would like to handle it, ask to have it reduced (dress nice and ask very politely), the DA will reduce it to 9 over. Pay ~110 bucks, and be done. I just had one when they supposedly were being stricter with the reductions - but I honestly spent 2 mins getting it reduced and paid. No difference in my insurance, it actually just went down 10 bucks per month.

[Edited on December 11, 2007 at 12:24 AM. Reason : def if it is your first get it reduced..2nd one you may want to ask the DA for PJC, ur call]

there's your problem right there. now you know.

another note about that city, the 'slow' lane is usually faster. makes absolutely no sense.

If you have AAA coverage, you may be eligible to receive legal fee reimbursement. FYI.

He wrote you up in the 55 zone on the highway, it decreases from 65 to 55 much further back before the burlington exit heading west. Thats not a speed trap, its just downright speeding. Ramseur is where it drops from 55 to 35 heading into town both ways and gets everyone and their mother. Lesson learned, its tough shit, just call a lawyer for it.

I don't know about Siler City because it's smaller than Charlotte but when i got my 22 over in Charlotte I didn't get a lawyer. When I got to court they put us all in a line told us that there were 1700 on the docket for the day and it was already 1pm. They told the criminals to get against the wall and if you had a speeding ticket you wanted dropped, or had a license plate or inspection ticket...something of that sort to get in a line and the DA either dismissed the ticket or just changed it to nine under. I got five under Really all they want is your money and they want to make as much as they can in a day so the faster they tell you nine over they get their $. If you go and you do have to see the judge and it seems like you are going to get in trouble, just ask for a continuance and THEN get a lawyer. I wouldn't waste your money getting one already.

Yeah see if you can get it entered as a city code violation, improper equipment, etc. Anything other than a moving violation. They still get their money, you still pay a penalty, but your insurance company doesn't get to rape you. If that fails, it's continuance and lawyer time. Of course, if they deny your continuance... well it's ass rape by a gay little gecko time.
