^^ they are animals that couldn't survive in the real world thus is a rescue... they are rescued from people who are retarded and buy tiger cubs and then freak out when they get big or when HP finds malnourished cubs abandoned on highways (really happens) ... its not like a zoo or the circus... and they wont take old circus animals because it encourages circus to buy, abuse and abandon wild animals...Not that it matters... commence with the doggie food!!!
12/10/2007 10:02:31 AM
But would cpt take open food bags? I didn't think anyone would.
12/10/2007 11:04:09 AM
^^ yes, but they originally started as a breeding program. i know they've changed, but I still don't like them for their history and wonder how much they've REALLY changed7trax - do you really want the food or are you just messing around?

Yes, CPT will take open bags of dog food. As long as it's not moldy. They'll take donations of meat (venison, beef, poultry), fruits, and vegetables. CPT started as a breeding program back in the late 70s/early 80s by Dr. Bleyman (a UNC geneticist). But he was interested in breeding the smaller keystone species such as binturongs, caracals, ocelots, and servals that are not well represented in zoos and aren't part of many captive breeding programs, therefore there isn't a large genetic pool of these animals. The great majority of the larger cats (tigers & leopards) were indeed rescues. All of which would have met a worse fate if CPT had not taken them in. CPT has changed A LOT from how they were in the past. Even over the past 7 years i've seen incredible changes (for the best). They are a USDA accredited facilty with a strong emphasis on education. They haven't purposely bred an animal there for over a decade. For example - 1. an idiot drug dealer in Durham thought it would be cool to have a tiger cub ride around in his convertible with him. Tiger cub was later confiscated and went to live at CPT = Romeo - one of the largest tigers on record in North America.2. Some asshole in Virginia had 3 tiger cubs and was raising them for their pelts and parts. The cubs soon were unmanageable and he left them abandoned to die in an old boxcar = the 3 Virginia girls (all of which are deceased now)3. A jaguar and a leopard were kept as junkyard cats somewhere in NC. they were kept in small cages and were found severely malnurished and neglected = Kato & Henry (RIP as well)4. More recently - 2 young tiger cubs were found wandering alongside a road outside Charlotte. It was assumed that someone abandoned them. They were picked up by Animal Control, quarantined at the NC zoo and came to live at CPT.I could go on (I volunteered there in Animal Care, have led tours and workgroups for years)anyways, good luck selling an open bag of dog food. I just mentioned a place to donate it if you can't sell it. Why throw something away if it could be of use to someone else. I'd offer to pick it up and bring it out there but I can't.[Edited on December 10, 2007 at 1:22 PM. Reason : blah]

Yes, I actually do want the food. For my own dog.
