Lets say you have a SO that you've dated for a long while, that you really love and you see as a pretty significant relationship, but you're really in no rush to move to the next level yet.

However, your mom has reservations about this person mostly because she feels like she made the mistake of marrying your father too young and she doesn't want you to make the same mistake even though you don't know how many times you've stressed that you're in no rush. She says things like "I want you to go and travel the world, like I never got to," and you realize that she is trying to live her life through yours.

Lets say you also stressed to your mom that at this point in your life you're really just have to go with things that make you happy and at this moment you've never been happier, and that you're going to start making choices that she won't approve of 100% of the time...

At what point do you tell your mom to fuck off and stay out of your business and to stop trying to live her life through yours?

And how could you do this without ruining the relationship between you two?

Just tell your mom that you're not going to dump your SO just because of her mistakes. And let her know that you aren't interested in getting married yet.

(If you're really 18 like your profile says, I hope you aren't planning on getting married.)

I'm really a chick posting on this name, I used to share this name with a male, but we no longer share it anymore, I seem to be the only one who gets on it anymore.

^and I'm 20, definitely not ready to get married, don't want to do that until I'm out of school and in my career

My favorite part of the conversation was when she said that she wanted me to travel the world, and I asked if she was going to pay for it, because I sure as hell can't afford to go around the world.

She said no.

How hard is for people to get their own profile on this site. Damn. Seriously, I mean some people probably have at least 12 names!

when your BF marries you, he marries into your family.

unless you dont have a good relationship with your family, then it will be a rough ride until something happens.

either sort it out now, or its gonna suck

^ Or, you could do what I did and just adopt his family and ignore yours.

But I guess if you actually like them you wouldn't want to do that.

People like Chance and billytalent (If they're not the same anyway!) cause a double-humped curve with the second hump being in the upper-20's to 30's.

you wont appreciate your parents until you're off the payroll

with that said i wish i would have listened to my parents more-- they were always right

making my own mistakes is all well and good but i'm at the point in my life where i seriously consider my parents opinions on things because they have a pretty good track record and my best interest at heart.

dont be so hard on your mom, you'll appreciate her more in a few years.

I learned early on that if your parent's (especially Mom, because you will ALWAYS be 'Daddy's little baby girl') do not like a guy, they are usually right and its best to take their advice. Sometimes, my parents like my current bf more than I do! With some other guys - there was awkward silence, shyness, and ended by my parents saying "Bethany, this just isn't gonna work, honey". They were ALWAYS right. And a couple timesI would bring guys home, let them meet my parents, when they left I would ask my parents and decide whether to keep them or not. That may sound mean in some ways, but it protects you - and your parents never want to see you sad. So they will give you honesty in order to keep you from hurting in the long haul.

I'm not sure this applies to EVERY girls parents. My parents tend to like the guys I bring home who are the biggest douchebags and liars. On the other hand, I've brought home guys who were nothing but sweet to me, and my parents "just didn't like them" but could never give a good reason why.

It's always good to use your own judgement based on your own standards.

Oh yeah, definitely use your own judgement, but also take their opinions into consideration. I mean, they can't pick the best one for you, but they see things that you may be too blinded by the love bug to see. And note that you said "guys who were sweet to you", I'm guessing that those guys are not in the picture anymore...
