anyone else feel like it is becoming more and more MTVified. Long, useless videos of sideline dialogue with bad music in the background (any MTV show these days), random 'heart-wrenching' stories that take 10 minutes to tell (they even got chris connely to cover them), increasing gaps between highlights (mtv doesnt show music videos anymore)Disclaimer: My views on MTV are based on what I see some friends watch when I occasionally visit them, I don't watch MTV on my own time.

that was posted in case they had changed their ways or anything
12/5/2007 6:43:24 PM
if there was an alternative to SC, I'd be all over it.however foxsports sucks, and nfl network covers only well the nfl. they need to improve their shit. hell bring back 24/7 of stuart scott. wait. nm. anything but that
12/5/2007 6:51:09 PM
SC is fucking useless nowremember the good ol' days...no talking heads, no hot seats, no 50 states in 50 days, no light shows, no scrolling ticker, no throwing it back to PTI, no ultimate highlights, no the blitz, no skip bayless, nothingall you got was an ugly ass brown background, a full hour or nothing but highlights, one sunday conversation a week, and one top ten a week.those were the days man.
12/5/2007 6:53:00 PM
You know what sucks is when you turn it to MTV2, the channel that they created to just play music videos, and you see some stupid show like "The Hills" or some dating show. I say we all revoke their privilege to call themselves Music Television, b/c they obviously aren't living up to the name.As for SportsCenter, heck ESPN in general, they are just one big hype machine. ESPN2 should just call themselves Poker TV during the mid-day hours of the week.
12/5/2007 6:55:42 PM
The problem with sportscenter is too many people are involved. Back in the day when it was good, there were 3-5 people that would be shown the WHOLE show. Now, you can't watch 5 minutes of sportscenter without hearing 8 different douchebag's opinion on a certain subject.
12/5/2007 6:59:56 PM
^ excatly I remember the good old days when Stewart Scott was man and it was usually just him now its everybody and him still
12/5/2007 7:03:02 PM
Stewart Scott has always sucked.
12/5/2007 7:05:06 PM
na but nice try
12/5/2007 7:05:51 PM
sweet sassy molassey
12/5/2007 7:06:48 PM
yes, mtv and sportscenter both suck.when pti's over, i can't change the channel fast enough.
12/5/2007 7:07:51 PM
I use to love Sportscenter, except for maybe the brown background and Stuart Scott lapping up Carolina every night. But it is terrible now. Sometimes they don't even get to highlights of games because they have wasted 40 minutes with those feel good stories or worse yet in depth analysis of random NFL games 6 days, 5 days, and on, in advance. And if they do show highlights it is of one basket or one touchdown only. More and more they close broadcasts by saying something like "By the way we didn't have time for the highlights but "random sports team" won. But what are the alternatives. Fox Sports has so much extra stats and scrolling on the screen you can't even see the actual highlights that they hide in the upper left hand corner. And local news is a joke. Now I get the majority of my news from the internet b/c at least I can get a full story and some idea of what happened in the game.
12/5/2007 7:08:35 PM
i liked it back in the day w/ dan patrick & kenny mayne & even keith olberman wasn't that bad (compared to the current crew)
12/5/2007 7:09:05 PM
espn has gone head over heels down the crapperand can we get some daily standings, whatever league, shown on sportscenter? i mean, how hard would that be?
12/5/2007 7:10:01 PM
this being tww and all i thought i was gonna get blasted for this thread
12/5/2007 7:15:11 PM
the thread wasn't exactly necessary, but you're completely right. it is doing to sports what mtv did to music.
12/5/2007 7:17:19 PM
i was perturbed by the segment on the patriots sideline of just them yelling obvious shit like "play all 60 minutes...ALL 60 MINUTES" and random tackles that are louder than if you were right beside themthen the hot seat was onand when stephen a. smith shows up, its just MUTE, then channel change, because mute takes less immediate time
12/5/2007 7:20:49 PM
thank god Kenny Mayne is back.
12/5/2007 7:32:23 PM
yeah we just need a general thread to complain about SC inand it is starting to get on my nerves with all the extra stuff
12/5/2007 7:37:10 PM
i can't watch it anymore. in fact i dont. i can not stand what sportscenter has become. fox sports is a terrible alternative. espnews is somewhat bareable. that is what i watch
12/5/2007 7:50:36 PM
sportscenter killed the bas-ket-ball star
12/5/2007 7:51:27 PM
yo has tnt started up with basketball yet? i could really go for a good game
12/5/2007 7:55:15 PM
Every Thursday night
12/5/2007 7:58:12 PM
Breaks my heart to know that TNT doesn't do Tuesday anymore
12/5/2007 8:07:17 PM
They haven't had Tuesday games since like 2002
12/5/2007 8:10:56 PM
12/5/2007 8:12:25 PM
I'm waiting for a Daily Show-type show that just does sports. How Jon Stewart lampoons mass media, this show could do to ESPN.
12/5/2007 8:18:05 PM
i think this come from the people that actually work at SC are bored as hell from just doing highlights, they wanna have some fun, tell stores, unnecessarily interview 20 experts per showits a common thing thats going on in tveach show tries to copy an element from other popular showslike the other day i saw cnn's anderson cooper and a female co host joking about japanese youtube videos for like 5 minutes, that was a clear copy of the daily show, and it was painful to watch
12/5/2007 9:13:37 PM
George Michael's Sports Machine FTW
12/5/2007 9:43:19 PM
old school SC(I'm talking 13 years ago) was awesome. If you think stewart scott was the good old days your a moron. He is one of the main reasons the current shit exists.Everything KO and DP and before them was quality. Can someone tell me why the ultimate highlight has spinners before it goes? And what the fuck is the ultimate highlight anyway, it should be called what it is "3 minutes of fill of crap with music playing"Won't change so it doesn't matter to bitch about it. The current format allows for sponsorshipped segments, and that is what they want. All about $$.[Edited on December 5, 2007 at 11:23 PM. Reason : Stewart Scott is a fucking tool. He can fucking chew the other side of the pillow for all I care.]
12/5/2007 11:20:52 PM
i remember liking the sportscenter where right before it came on it would show that black screen with some blue on the side i think, and then it would cut into the opening theme. i still cant believe they got rid of the opening theme song for SC, that tune was famous
12/5/2007 11:23:13 PM
here is a good gem coming up on SC.. Mercury Morris is going to rap. awesome.

12/6/2007 12:14:43 AM
12/6/2007 12:18:23 AM
doesn't change the fact SC commercials are still the shit
12/6/2007 12:18:45 AM
Three tremendous flaws:1) The success of PTI turned the entire network into a talking-head split-screen, side-ticker-countdown-obsessed itemization of sports news. Only two people on the network (still) can do yelling at each other and "cutting to the chase" while being entertaining and informative... tony and mike.2) Journalistic intergity. When Scott Van Pelt asks Kirk Herbstreit what he thinks about College Football, it is an ESPN employee asking another ESPN employee a question. Sometimes they have guys in the studio on split-screen who are across the room from each other! This allows the network to completely MAKE UP stories and issues. This happens every single day on every single program. Baseball Tonight is notorious... watch "breakdowns"... John Kruk doesn't actually think that ____ will be a surprise second-half star... it's all fed to their own talking heads.A friend of mine had a Journalism professor claim that ESPN has less integrity than FOX News, and I kind of agree, especially since...3) No competition. Nothing's gonna change. They're gonna keep having "Life is an Open Road" and "Who's NOW" and Bill Simmons columns and oversized magazines until something of quality that can appeal to idiots also comes along.[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 12:23 AM. 12/6/2007 12:22:09 AM
can we switch this to the all-things-wrong-with-ESPN thread?Monday Night Countdown!
12/6/2007 12:31:37 AM
12/6/2007 12:38:45 AM
In both cases (mtv and espn), they are only putting what viewers want to see on television. Mtv doesn't play music videos because people don't watch them. They'd rather watch the Hills. People watch this fluffy shit on Sportscenter apparently. Trust the networks to put on tv what provides the most viewers and subsequently the most money.
12/6/2007 1:30:13 AM
it's sure as shit not what i want to see.
12/6/2007 1:37:36 AM
I like some of the analysis. I would like the banter if the experts were talking. But listening to Stephen A Smith using the same 3 or four phrases to describes what is happening in every Sports-related situation is a waste of fucking time.

12/6/2007 2:00:40 AM
^^^^ I agree to a point, except that I can't imagine anyone on the planet wanting to watch Keyshawn, Herbstreit, and Wilbon debate "Who's NOW" Jeff Gordon vs. Mario Sharapova! Let's go!With no competition, why wouldn't ratings improve? More people get cable every year; more people watch ESPN.It's still the first channel I check out, and I hate half the crap up there. There's just no quality alternative to sports news/entertainment on TV.[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 2:09 AM. Reason : ^^^^]
12/6/2007 2:09:10 AM
there's really only so much that can be said about the NFL. but they just keep on keeping on.
12/6/2007 2:15:56 AM
FYI it is Stuart Scott....I miss Rich Eisen, Charley Steiner, Dan Patrick, Kenny Mayne, Craig Kilborn, Chris Myers hell Linda Cohn.....man how the mighty have fallen.
12/6/2007 2:23:38 AM
that was bothering me too^Well, obviously some of their ideas are new and probably wont ever be seen again (who is the most now?) Well they don't have any competition obviously because they own the market. But even attempts like Fox are clearly inferior. It is easy to pick apart, but it's the best we've got.
12/6/2007 2:36:16 AM
12/6/2007 3:08:30 AM
Good, fuck them. We are the victim of their cash-grab.

you guys need to stop acting like kilby was worthy of being mentioned alongside mayne, patrick & olbermanwhat did kilborn have in his arsenal, jumanji? thats all he had as far as i can rememberon a different note, what about charlie steiner, i loved it when he laughed, b/c once he started it just seemed like he had the damnedest time trying to stop[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 3:46 AM.
