Anyone else worked out in the new gym area yet? It is really impressive. I'd say it was worth the wait.
12/5/2007 4:13:26 PM
This is on my to do list to investigate.

i guess it won't be open after exams?
12/5/2007 4:27:12 PM
it was supposed to open at the beginning of the semester
12/5/2007 4:29:18 PM
plus there's a port city java in there.
12/5/2007 4:41:55 PM
The new woodway treadmills have very little impact. They are so quiet and simulate running on small wood planks.
12/5/2007 4:42:16 PM
port city java = expensive[Edited on December 5, 2007 at 4:51 PM. Reason : .]
12/5/2007 4:50:54 PM
Really? I've walked by it going in, but I have yet to stop and check it out.
12/5/2007 4:52:01 PM
why in the hell would you put a coffee bar in a gym? smoothie bars (ones with whey and creatine) I can see, but coffee? Hell, why not put a fucking krispy kreme in.
12/5/2007 4:52:31 PM
Rec center, here I come!
12/5/2007 4:57:26 PM
12/5/2007 4:59:46 PM
because not everyone goes in their to improve their body and healthsome people work in the morning to wake up and get a little energy from exercise, some want to raise endorphinsits perfectly acceptable to have a coffee place in a gym, its no ones fault but your own if you lack the discipline to eat correctlycarmichael doesnt serve only the grunting meatheads man
12/5/2007 4:59:49 PM
I don't lack discipline, but so many others do. Talley would have made a much better location, imo.
12/5/2007 5:02:36 PM
Talley is across the street, why dont you walk to the Atrium for your smoothie? why not walk to Weisger-Brown to do your damn power cleansNCSU IS NOT YOUR PARENTS[Edited on December 5, 2007 at 5:06 PM. Reason : c]
12/5/2007 5:04:34 PM
The coffee shop went into carmichael because that's where university dining wanted it (as opposed to Talley, which I agree would have been a better location)
12/5/2007 5:05:08 PM
Do I even attend ncsu anymore? Do I use Carmicheal? Do I even live in raleigh? Does talley even have smoothies? As far as I know, these are all answered with a NO.I also prefer to carry my own gatorade, whey and creatine, and make my own peri/post workout smoothies.[Edited on December 5, 2007 at 5:07 PM. Reason :cleans are on my menu today ][Edited on December 5, 2007 at 5:08 PM. Reason : ]
12/5/2007 5:07:09 PM
then why the fuck are you bitching
12/5/2007 5:07:57 PM
Because I can. And, I wanted to smack the people that frequented carmicheal, when I did.
12/5/2007 5:09:44 PM
anyone on tww who works/worked @ carmichael
12/5/2007 5:17:26 PM
I'm pretty impressed, except for the whole required towel check-out shit. But otherwise they have 3 of the nicest racks I've seen. They have two different sets of hooks (one is a deep hook and the other is a small j, perfect for squatting). Except I hate the hexagon plates when deadlifting.
12/5/2007 5:21:16 PM
i hate hexagon plates period, i just cant get with them at all they throw me off maybe they land wrong or somethin, i do like the handles tho, i got some good hammer throwin drills because the 45s had handles on em
12/5/2007 5:22:44 PM
12/5/2007 6:15:20 PM
i use to work out in the morning. I need to do it again. Always a great way to start the day.
12/5/2007 6:16:50 PM
i thought about going this morning, but decided it was too early in the AM to be adventurous--i'm a creature of habit
12/5/2007 6:17:26 PM
there's a port city there because:-it's really close to the bus stop, so there's easy access to those who aren't around just for the gym.-they have smoothies and fresh juices, not just coffee.-they do sell protein bars.-talley is already really full, and it was probably easier to add a port city to a new building than to try and accommodate it somewhere established.-and yeah, it is expensive, but it's also really good.-they're adding like 5 more around campus in the near future
12/5/2007 7:25:34 PM
i havent gone to the gym since prt 238
12/5/2007 7:26:46 PM
PCJ has THE best chai shakes.
12/5/2007 7:35:40 PM
i am impressed with the rec center, NCSU has been due for decent workout equipmenti'd actually pay to use the facilities if i had to
12/5/2007 7:45:28 PM
i remember when they got the new equipment for carmicheal a few years back........ahhhh the good ole days. The coffee bar is stupid. Only women and queerbaits would use that at the gym.
12/5/2007 8:35:57 PM
my soph / junior years i used carmichael quite a bitthis past summer / fall semester i've been over at planet fitness off buck jonesits way more convenient for me than the on campus stuff has ever beenbetter hours, easier parking, $10 a month..i probably won't ever be working out regularly on campus ever againthe main thing that impressed me over at the new carmichael complex was all the cardio equipment on the top floor
12/5/2007 8:38:52 PM
The coffee bar/shop is on the first floor, the bit exercise room is on the third. There is no way this should conflict with anyone's workout habits. Hell if you walked in early in the morning, the smell of the coffee may park you up a bit. It's go tons of cardio machines, good weight benches/machines, and free weights. There is a dedicated ab area and 5-6 water fountains so you never have to wait in line. The TVs are a plus to keep you occupied while on the machines. The only thing I don't like is the lack of mirrors. I'd venture to believe that more people use the mirror in a weight room than any other piece of "equipment".
12/5/2007 9:56:33 PM
I'll be working there next semester
12/5/2007 11:00:52 PM
so whats the place look like? walk in the front door and there is sign in desks or what...got any new age retina scans or what?
12/5/2007 11:02:58 PM
you walk in sign in is on your right the port city java is straight in front of youwalk up a couple floors of stairs to the top level where the fitness center is
12/5/2007 11:06:49 PM
12/5/2007 11:07:19 PM
all you gotta do is make friends with one and sign a waiver
12/5/2007 11:10:19 PM
did you go to that port city java place yet jnpaul?
12/5/2007 11:13:46 PM
12/5/2007 11:21:25 PM
12/5/2007 11:35:55 PM
I don't know, like I said, I won't be using it. I was referring to an above post.
12/5/2007 11:37:09 PM
ha, I'm just clearing up the confusion. You would think that they might try and capitalize on the uneducated and sell them some sort of quasi protein shake, but that is all they had when I inquired.
12/5/2007 11:38:45 PM
yeah just the special k ones. it's not that the people at state don't want to do protein shakes, because obviously there'd be a good market for them, it's that port city is a branded store and ncsu can't change/add stuff without their approval. this is the first port city in a gym, so who knows. perhaps in the future.
12/5/2007 11:43:06 PM

12/5/2007 11:45:45 PM
no i didn't go to port city java...it smelled nice though when i walked in the doori was a little confused as to why they would put a coffee shop in the gymin all honesty that place isn't too easily accessible to most students who would be interested in that sort of thingi give it 1 year of being open until its turned into something else[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 12:51 AM. ^they're adding more around campus. also have smoothies and juice. it's close to the bus stop and talley. but hey, if all it's good for is smelling nice... then that's ok, i'm sure they'll find a better use for the space eventually haha.
12/6/2007 12:44:44 AM
If they turned it into a little cafe with some picnic tables with umbrellas outside, that would be nice in the non-cold months.
