btw, bagels are one of the unhealthiest things man can eat.



as far as juice goes, it is far far healthier than [most] muffins, bagels, and cookies.

and as the "[most]" implies, bagels, muffins, cookies, etc need not be unhealthy, but >>99% of all commercially produced such [baked] products are extremely unhealthy. (finely milled white flour, lots of added sugar, butter, margarine, etc)

Most cereals the way people eat them.
Non whole grain sugary cereals are terrible.
Processed whole grains aren't that much better.
And good whole grain cereals, while being very healthy, also pack a lot of energy (read, calories.)

A true serving of cereal is tiny, so when you eat that big bowl or two of whole grain cereal with milk you can pretty easily take in 700+ calories. It's a very healthy way to get your energy as long as you're going to blow through that energy. Not so great if you're going to drive to your office and plop down at a desk for the next 8-10 hours.

Muffins are just cake that you eat and call it breakfast.

I'm going to go ahead and bring up potatoes. A lot like the cereal I mentioned. It's very starchy and packs a ton of energy. Great if you're going to burn that energy, but not so great if you are like most Americans who eat them daily and don't exercise nearly enough.

I'll tack on corn as well for pretty much the same reason as the potatoes. Good for you, but packed with calories.

Also, anything healthy that has been fried. Chicken, fish, etc. But man that is some tasty food!

main problem with that is the potato is usually served fried in one form or another.

and juice can be great if you get the right kind. Unsweetened cranberry juice for example has alot of health benefits, fresh squeezed OJ is very healthy too.

If you are going to eat 3 big meals a day only, then your breakfast should be at least 500 calories, and preferably upto 700, so I don't see anything wrong with a breakfast that big.


Good whole grain cereals... are just THE WHOLE INTACT GRAIN, not grains ground into flour and made into flakes.

http://www.bobsredmill.com provides me with breakfast everyday... for the past 3 years now.

P.S. Sweet potatoes are infinitely healthier than potatoes.

nothing makes me madder (haha) than to see someone base the "healthiness" of a food based on calorie content. often, people who do this, make the claims based on the assumption the reader is the average american who sits on his ass all day.

It's borderline in my opinion and goes over the top when people add a glass of OJ and possibly something on the side like eggs or toast. With all the studies showing how much better off we are by "grazing" I don't see the point in slamming 2100+ calories in three sittings anyway.

And while a lot of people say to "eat breakfast like a king, eat lunch like a prince, and eat dinner like a pauper" I just don't see it as being relevant for most of us. I'll certainly do it on the mornings when I'm going swimming before work, but not on the mornings where I'm driving straight from home to work. If I did manual labor or something then by all means I'd be for it.

Something tells me if I eat 1400 calories for breakfast and lunch it will go straight to my waste before I get a chance to hit the gym that night. I tend to think of breakfast in a very utilitarian way. I basically eat a little food to tell my metabolism to get going and try to keep it up throughout the day. Then I'll either eat a reasonable dinner or two small dinners if I'm going to the gym (one before and one after).

Then again, I'm on a lower calorie diet than most people. I try to keep it under 2000 even when I'm not dieting and around 1400-1500 when I am which is pretty low for someone of my size. I'll go + or - a little depending on how much I'm exercising on any given day or how poorly my muscles are recovering from the previous day.

p.s. Kashi Lean Crunch cereal is the best true whole grain cereal that I've found. It is pretty high in fiber and definitely keeps you full all morning.

oh yeah...I'm definitely down with sweet potatoes (in moderation.) Great source of Beta Carotene, E, C, and one of the B's (B6 I think.)

I know, agree, and practice that. But I said IF you are going to eat just 3 meals, your breakfast needs to be >= 500 calories.

As far as cold cereals go, this is the best I have tried:

^^ I ate some of the "Optimum Power" cereal for breakfast Saturday (before working in the yard for 9 hours.) It's good stuff. Mine had cranberries.

You already lost this thread. Nobody in their right mind thinks mayonaise is good for them.

As for the other comment...I've had to educate myself, learn from my mistakes, and put in a lot of time and work to get into decent shape.

Being a little overweight is bad, but I have no problem swimming for an hour+, riding 20+ miles on a mountain bike, and keeping my heartrate between 165-180 for an hour of cardio. My doctor commented last week that I have a "nice slow athletic heartbeat" and my cholesterol levels were great the last time I had a physical.

Some people are fortunate to have great health without working for it, but it doesn't mean they know a damn thing about nutrition or fitness.

what's that? i know triticale is a grain.

millet, quinoa, and amaranth are also very nice.

as far as nutrition goes, wheat is not that great, and is quite bad for you unless you eat the intact grains.

barley and oats are the healthiest common grains, far far superior to wheat. millet, quinoa, and amaranth are also at the top, but are not that common. quinoa and amaranth are ancient grains, and are the only grains which are complete proteins.

p.s. studies on barley have shown that it regulates blood sugar upto 10 hours after consuming it. which means you could have it for breakfast and it will control your blood sugar till dinner time.


while in wheat, the fiber is found in the bran, and not inside the grain, in barley, the fiber is found throughout the grain. not to mention, it tastes heavenly, both in savoury and in sweet applications.

I can't eat a lot in the AM for breakfast. I am really not that hungry upon first waking. What i have changed though is making my lunch meal bigger, with a afternoon healthy snack, and a more modest dinner. With a protein shake added in if i lift that day.

Well, muffins and bagels are "healthier" than donuts. It cracks me up when the morbidly obese person goes to Subway and orders a giant meatball sub with extra cheese, chips, soda, and cookies and thinks they're doing their weight a favor.

Speaking of salad. . .

A salad is only as healthy as what you choose to put on it. I cannot stand people who say they only had a salad, but I watched them put a crap load of creamy dressing, bacon, ham, cheese, and gosh knows what else on it.

These of course are the days when I'm on the road for work and can't just reach in my cabinet and pour a heaping serving of Fruity Pebbles.

Whole grain english muffins are a great breakfast choice. The Thomas Lite Multi-Grain English muffins (http://thomas.gwbakeries.com/product.cfm/upc/4812127620) are just 100 calories but 8g of dietary fiber and 6g of protein per muffin. Its better than most bread/toast and most cereals people eat. Can make a killer Egg McMuffin knockoff with them that are really healthy (canadian bacon, egg substitute, and 2% milk cheese)

Bagels, especially the way most people eat them with tons of cream cheese and/or jam, are basically really dense baked donuts... loads of empty carbs and loads of fat in the cream cheese combine for tons of calories with very little nutrition. In fact, Men's Health once did their "Eat this, Not that" and showed that 2 Egg McMuffins from McDonald's were healthier than a single bagel with cream cheese (fewer calories and more nutrition).

Salads at restaurants are definitely the most deceiving dish out there. Women will comment how they are going to get salad because they are on a diet only to order the fried chicken tender salad with ranch dressing, or hell even a chicken caesar salad. For example, the boneless buffalo chicken salad with ranch dressing (at Chili's) is 1150 calories, 83g of fat, and 4400mg of sodium. That is 58% of your daily calorie intake, 128% of your daily fat allowance, and 183% of your daily sodium intake. That is not even remotely close to an acceptable meal, let alone a healthy one.
