Thread title says it all. Look, folks, the BCS was created to end the controversy of the national championship in college football. Every fucking year there has been controversy. NOT ONCE has it worked. It has never worked! The BCS has proven time and time again that it is imperfect and that it can't do what it was made to do. It is time to get rid of it and implement a playoff system. Some people say "Do a +1 format!" Guess what folks? That STILL won't work. Remember the year we had 5 undefeated teams? Yep. You'd have at least 1 undefeated team left out. And even still, you would be relying on the system that has proven that it can't work. +1 is useless. The only solution is to go to a playoff system. How many teams? 4, 8, 32? It's a really simple answer: 16. The reason it's this simple is that the only way the playoff system can be legitimate is if you include ALL conference champions. Most people like an 8-team field, but that would leave out several champions, and that simply isn't right. Name me any playoff system in any other sport that leaves out division champs. Name me one. It doesn't exist. Yet we allow in college football. Why? And let's be honest: right now we already have a playoff system; it's just a 2-team field. Some people will say that it is because the other conferences "clearly" aren't good enough to deserve the championship. If that is the case, then why are they in the same league? Why are they in the same league if they aren't good enough to compete? Again, name me ONE league where teams are excluded from competing for the championship at all. Sure, the Baltimore Orioles suck, but they can still make it to the World Series. Boise State, however, will NEVER play for a national championship under the current system, and they probably would never play for one in an 8-team field either. The only answer, like I have said, is 16 teams. Otherwise the playoff system doesn't produce a legitimate championship. Worried about hurting the players? Well, I-AA has a 16-team field. Why not I-A? Do the I-A players have glass jaws or something? Sure, the players are much stronger in I-A, but that means that EVERY player is stronger, not just a few. The strength and conditioning in I-A is clearly better than in I-AA, so there shouldn't be a concern there. Players get hurt in bowl games, anyway, so what is the difference?Another "complaint" about such a large field is that "players have classes and exams!" Hmmm, how does I-AA accomplish it, then? I wonder... Besides, let's be honest, in I-A the players rarely are students anyway. Their "tutors" are doing their homework and the players are students in name only. Yes, there are some players who take it seriously, but the vast majority don't. Moreover, a 16-team field doesn't mean that all 16 teams are playing all four weeks. 8 teams play just one week, 4 teams play just 2 weeks. That really is a small number of teams playing, so the number of affected players is minimal. I'd wager that the number of players "missing" classes would be comparable to the basketball championship, so the argument falls flat even here.A third complaint is that it will kill the bowl system. 1) So? The bowl system DOESN'T produce a national champion. That's why the BCS was created, right? 2) Do we really need the Humanitarian Bowl, anyway? The bowl system is so fucking big right now that it is ridiculous. If a playoff system trims out some of these bowls, then I am all for it. 3) A playoff system doesn't HAVE TO KILL the bowls if done correctly. What you can do is have the lesser bowls still pick teams that don't make the 16-team field. Play the first 8 games at the home-site of the higher-seeded team. The 8 losers can then be invited to the middle-tier bowls. The next 6 games of the playoffs would then be played in the current BCS bowls. The losers of the second-round could go to mid-tier bowls if you want, but that doesn't really matter. The final game would be equivalent to the current championship game as far as "bowls" go. Hold it, at worst, the week before the Super Bowl, and everyone is happy.Still others argue "who will you leave out?" We might leave out a #17 or a #15, and that is unfortunate. Then again, aren't they currently left out? I'd say that it's a hell of a lot better to leave out a #17 (who goes to a bowl, anyway) than to leave out a #3. Or a #2. Or a #1. That won't happen in a 16-team field, but it happens today. In an 8-team field, you leave out a #7 or a #6, as well as a #9 and a #10. Today they are bitching about a #6 or #7 team being leap-frogged, so I see it as comparable. The "strongest" and dumbest argument is that a playoff system will make games "meaningless." After all, when tOSU lost to Illinois, wouldn't it be "meaningless" if tOSU could still come back and win it all? Well, isn't it kind of meaningless that Oklahoma beat Mizzou TWICE this year? Why did they play that game the first time? Isn't that the case in any conference championship game? People would counter that any game that doesn't directly effect the championship is meaningless, then, and clearly conference championships do that, right? What about the championship for Conference USA? The MAC? Those, definitely don't matter. And, honestly, NONE of the games in the lesser conferences matter, really. No MAC game matters. No MWC game matters. No WAC game really matters. Hawaii is undefeated, after all, and it sure played a hell of a lot of WAC games, didn't it? We've got plenty of worthless games right now, so to argue that a playoff would make games meaningless is ludicrous.Ultimately, the fact is that the BCS was created to prevent the "little" conferences from ever winning a National Championship. That was it's real purpose, and it has excelled at doing just that. And people want to hold on to this thing? Come on. Let's be fair to these other conferences and give them a shot. Let's quit shitting on them. It doesn't happen in any other sport or league, so let's cut the bullshit. We have plenty of reasons to hate the BCS already. I'll add one more. All season long, I have cheered for teams I wouldn't normally cheer. Today was no exception. I like WV, and I really like Mizzou. I like those two teams, and I also abhor OU. But today, I cheered on OU and rooted against WVU, because I hate the BCS so much. Last week I cheered on Mizzou, because I wanted Kansas to lose in order to knock off another undefeated, even though I really liked the Kansas story this year. I also rooted against Boise State, and I really like the BSU story, too, because I wanted Hawaii to stay undefeated to further the case against the BCS. Look at what the BCS has reduced plenty of people to doing: cheering on teams to win that they really don't want to win. Name me another sport that promotes something as retarded as this. [/BCS]]

you have 6 BCS conferences(ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, Pac 10, SEC). Make each conference have a championship game and the teams that win get automatic bids. Then maybe have 2 or 4 at large bids to make it 8 or 10 teams. No need for 16 teams.[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 12:24 AM. Reason : ]

^ and leave out conference champions. Brilliant. way to ignore one of my points.^^^ & ^^ Then why did you post? Why do you watch college football if you don't give a shit that it is such a bunch of crap?]

You're right, it hasn't worked once... and it's still around. Makes you wonder if they will ever get rid of it.I'd love it if it worked out such that there was no team with only one loss - they'd all have at least 2. I'm pulling for that this year.Like 10+ teams all with 2 losses.[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 12:30 AM. Reason : -]

16 is too much, it's like ESPN was saying which i agree with, you don't want to make the season irrelevant.. 8 seems better. of course you'll still have some complaining but too bad
12/2/2007 12:34:57 AM
Why should I shut up, BD?
12/2/2007 12:37:00 AM
Eight teams is a great number for a playoff. Six champions and two at large bids based off the top two teams left using the BCS standings. It's not that hard.
12/2/2007 12:37:52 AM
nobody's going to want to play a conference championship is there are going to be 3-4 more games they need to play
12/2/2007 12:37:53 AM
^ great, then get rid of conference championship games.^^ So, again, you have an illegitimate champion. Makes sense to me.Really, folks, keep ignoring every word I say.

this isnt basketball folksthis is a contact sport with students involved, students whose livelihood are at stakes.this will be a longggggggg time coming, and i doubt it ever, ever happens. No AD will admit to wanting it. None of the major contributors want it. NCAA seriously doesnt want it.

If it's all about money, then why have a championship? At the very least, why play the game on the college level? Why not just make these guys a semi-pro league?
12/2/2007 12:53:39 AM
did you ever see the "top reasons you cant blame the NCAA for not paying athletes?"the NCAA has WAYYYYYYYY more sports than just Football...dont forget the soccer player, the track star, the swimmer...^because the fans got tired of a writer being able to determine who was a champ from year to year and they found out that as a company, broadcasting company they could make MILLIONS of the championship game...COMPETITION, SUPPLY AND DEMAND.DEMAND is HIGH, supply is low...economics win this thread.[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 12:56 AM. There are what, about 27 bowl games every year? Why not add a couple other neutral sites, and have a 32 team playoff at these neutral sites? Try to regionalize it to limit travel costs if possible, and have the 1st round be at places that typically have less significant bowls (like Houston, Detroit, San Fran, etc.), and the later rounds at places that typically have the bigger bowls. One of the BCS locations would be the site of the national championship, with the other BCS bowl sites hosting the semis, and one of the quarterfinal matchups.
12/2/2007 12:58:55 AM
see, here's the thing. What is there to argue with that the ADs suck? How does that take away or support my claim that we NEED a playoff system? I'm not calling you a troll at this point, cause at least you are trying to address the issue, unlike JTMONEYTROLL. I understand that money is why the system is as it is. I'm arguing that we need to change the system...^ I dunno, I think 32 is pushing it. That makes it bigger than the NFL and I-AA fields, and a 32-team field would certainly do to the bowl-system what the 64-team field did to the basketball NIT.]

stop trolling the damn thread. it deserves serious discussion. yes when i first looked at it i thought "words", but then i actually read it.i agree with all of it. and i highly doubt it's cut/pasted from anywhere.i support this thread, and the concept of a playoff w/conference champs. only addition i would make is to force all conferences to have a championship game. or if you aren't going to do that, then put an end to all conference championship games, but i'd rather just see everyone have them.
12/2/2007 1:00:17 AM
the point im tryin to make is no matter how much we complain or make threads or bicker in here it wont et changed. there are too many limitations that are out of the reach of the players, fans, coaches and even the ADs somewhat. CASH RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME.until you could figure out a money MATCHING way to get a playoff system into order...it wont happen.and if you can come up with that...you should be a billionaire.supply and demand.
