http://ncst.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13663055161

its a very long debate, and here's a gem:

Quote :
"well first off i haven't seen the movie because it isn't out yet. second i haven't read the books because i'm a little busy with putting myself through college. third the college i attend is Georgia Tech which boasts top 5 ratings for every engineering program that it offers and is one of the best engineering schools in the WORLD. the mere fact that i attend such a school is a testament to my intelligence level so don't be so hasty to call people ignorant.

lastly my point in that is that if people are really faithful christians then it makes no difference whether they see the movie or not. if you are afraid your faith will be shaken by a fiction tale then you do not truly believe. and if you wish to be openminded as is the christian way then you would not prevent others from seeing a movie because you don't want to expose them from non-christian views."

Fundamentalist Christians hate the book series anyway, for obvious reasons.

Not to mention that there's a big debate about how closely the movies will follow the books EXACTLY because of shit like this: they're actually toning down the anti-religious bits in the movies to cater to these fundie nutballs. So fuck them.

and LOL to whomever said the books were "pro-atheist" when God exists in the series

[Edited on November 30, 2007 at 3:18 PM. Reason : oh, and it's PAINFULLY OBVIOUS that most of these people haven't read the series]

^^^^yea i saw someone i knew join the group, one of those "oh, you're one of those people" kinda moments

^^^i think its more 'pro atheist' because they kill God, in the words of the author, while i and this guy see it as

killing the character God, not killing "God." hes asserting that the children metaphorically decimate the confines of organzied, and clearly disillusioned and corrupted, religion

^^yea...but he takes a terpballish approach to some of his retorts

Quote :
"ok um the whole using upper-level diction to make yourself seem smarter thing has kinda worn out it's welcome so you should just give it a rest.
what your saying is:
1. the author meant something in his novel that he doesn't claim to have meant but you apparently know better than him.
2. based on your assumptions those who have not read the actual text are ignorant and not allowed to form an opinion (btw opinions are based on knowledge of the subject therefore if you have a brain and can comprehend what's going on then you are indeed entitled to form an opinion)
3.you're not ugly
what i'm saying:
1. you are ugly. let's not even pretend about that anymore. putting on glasses doesn't get rid of the dumbo ears and the "Roxanne" nose (if you haven't seen that movie i recomend it. pretty funny)
2. it really doesn't matter what the intent of the author was. it should just be taken at face value which is: it's a book/movie- enjoy it!"

which is where i got the for

I'm fairly sure that NCSU ranks high than GT in the program I'm in and that NCSU isn't currently in the top 5 either.

that isn't until the very end of the trilogy

i don't remember what was really anti-religious about the first book, other than the symbolisms that could be drawn

^^well if you didn't know why this debate was happening, that's a spoiler enough

^They note that Pullman said that, but don't realize that he also said:
Quote :
""Religion is at its best when it is furthest from political power," he says. "The power to send armies to war, to rule every aspect of our lives, to tell us what to wear, what to think, what to read--when religion gets hold of that, watch out! Because trouble will ensue." Pullman has even received warm praise from members of the clergy, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, for his exploration of spiritual issues. "I suppose if you are interested in religious questions, that makes you religious," Pullman muses. "I am. What I am not is a believer in the sorts of gods that seem to be on offer from the various major religions.""

Oh, and the first book didn't do much in the way of the God stuff, unless you're counting the daemon/soul-splitting thing.

Hitler had it all wrong. He should have rounded up all the evangelical Christians and threw them into the gas chambers. I am so fucking sick of hearing them trying to legislate morality and try to force conformity of the masses to their warped views of Christianity and the bible

If a stupid fictional movie is enough to debunk and refute the religious beliefs of your children then perhaps you are not doing a good enough job at raising them as a christian or this merely illustrates the fault in your belief system

Man its fantasy...

people can dream up whatever they want and put it into a movie... all you should worry about is whether or not YOU should watch it.

i found it very interesting that this group had no wall and disabled threads, so i guess the creator didn't want any discussion about it, just blind conformation

wait... what the fuck is a Golden Compass?

and I think its pretty funny any time Christians get upset about a "fiction tale"
that's something they should know a bit about

I mean, they will kill over one particular piece of literature
big fans, ya know?

I joined it trying to add the "touched by his noodly appendage" picture.

Only to find out that I guess you can't just randomly add pictures to that group, so I promptly left it.

i would pay money for it
